KATHMANDU, AUG 05 - As two days remain for the ban on poultry products to expire, bird flu was confirmed in six more poultry farms in Kathmandu Valley on Monday.
With the fresh cases, the number of outbreaks in the past 21 days has gone up to 32, while one of the outbreak sites on Monday was in Lalitpur district.
The H5N1 strain of the flu was on Monday confirmed in chickens on farms owned by Bir Bahadur Bhusal of Balkot, Kiran Suwal of Ghoukhel, Narayan Hari Khatri of Sallaghari, Ram Lama of Sudal and Mahendra Bohaju of Chayamasingh, all in Bhaktapur. Samples from these farms had been tested in the Central Veterinary Investigation Laboratory.
The outbreak in Lalitpur was confirmed on a farm owned by Benup Raj Prasain in Imadol.
Spokesperson of the Department of Livestock Services (DoLS) Dr Narayan Ghimire said officials have been sent to slaughter chickens in these farms.
As the swelling number of flu cases in the Capital has left authorities scratching their heads, police and other stakeholders concerned have failed to impose a blanket ban on the sale of chicken in the Valley. The DoLS had prohibited the distribution and sale of chickens for a week on August 1.
As this Post reporter surveyed the markets on Sunday and Monday, six of the 15 meat shops were found selling chicken meat in Jhamsikhel, Sitapaila and Baluwatar areas. According to the Metropolitan Police Commissioner?s Office (MPCO), Ranipokhari, not a single person has been arrested so far for selling poultry products. MPCO Spokesperson SSP Hemanta Pal said surveillance has been beefed up at check-points in Thankot and Dakshinkali, the major entry points to the Capital.
However, no additional police squad has been deployed in the Capital to combat the bird flu crisis.
