Typhoid, viral flu out of control in Tanahun

DAMAULI: The epidemic of typhoid, viral influenza and fever spreading in Damauli Bazaar of Tanahun district and its adjoining places since two months has not come under control yet.

Typhoid and fever have not spared anyone be it common people, employees, security personnel, health workers, media persons, or political leaders. The diseases are blamed on contaminated water being distributed in Damauli.



Health workers had collected water sample at all three sources in use for supplying water to the district headquarters of Tanahun three weeks ago and sent to National Laboratory, Teku. But the report has not arrived yet, according to District Health Office.



The prolonged spread of the diseases has frightened locals. Damauli Hospital, Rupelo Hospital and a dozen private clinics are struggling to cater to typhoid and fever patients. RSS

DAMAULI: Fever, typhoid and viral influenza epidemic in Damauli Bazzar and the surrounding areas ? that has taken a toll on the locals here for the last few weeks ? is yet to come under control. Number of patients visiting local medical centres and hospitals is increasing by the day.

According to Shushila Karki, a technician at Damouli Hospital, typhoid virus was found in 46 out of 86 blood samples tested in the hospital lab.

She said that the hospital was also conducting awareness campaign to encourage people to drink clean water and pursue a healthy lifestyle. Contaminated water is the major cause for the spread of the disease in the region.

A team of locals including representatives from different organisations today submitted a memorandum to the Chief District Officer Bishnu Bhakta Neupane urging the local administration to take required measures to bring the epidemic under control.

Shantiraman Wagle, Chairman, Drinking Water and Sanitation Organisation, said that the lab test conducted on the samples of drinking water from seven local sources had shown that they were not safe for direct consumption. People have been advised to drink the water after purifying or boiling it properly.

Of late, the epidemic has also been reported to have spread in the western part of the district.
