For the first time in 13 years, the Netherlands has been hit by a serious outbreak of potentially deadly measles. The outbreak is concentrated in the country?s extensive Bible Belt, where the majority of fundamentalist Protestants do not believe in having their children vaccinated.

More than 30 cases have so far been reported, but the public health institute, RIVM, says that ?in view of the low vaccination uptake in the Bible Belt, it is assumed that the illness will spread further among unvaccinated children in the near future?...

Ministers in the orthodox Dutch Protestant churches are angry about what they see as interference from politicians who say children should be vaccinated against measles and other diseases.

Hundreds of children in the Dutch Bible belt have contracted measles over the past few weeks. Many people in the Netherlands' staunchly religious communities do not vaccinate their children on religious grounds...

A further 147 cases of measles were reported last week, bringing the total to 613, the public health institute RIVM said on Thursday.

The outbreak, which began in May, has also spread to four new local authority health services, including Utrecht and The Hague.

Among the new cases are two healthcare workers who probably contracted the disease during their work...

The measles epidemic which broke out in the Dutch Bible Belt last May is now over, the public health institute RIVM said on Friday.

In total, 2,600 people were diagnosed with measles but the total is likely to be far higher because many people did not go to their doctor...
