Explanation
Hospital admissions for 292 patients were reported today (current or previous). 234 deaths were reported. Not all of the hospital admissions or deaths occurred within the last 24 hours. In recent weeks, Tuesdays have consistently had the highest number of reports across the week. This can be explained by the fact that many of the deaths and hospital admissions that occur on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays are processed in the official records and reported on Mondays. This is visible in the graphs on the new page on Coronavirus Data.

Hospital admissions for 189 patients were reported today (current and previous). 132 deaths were reported. Not all of the hospital admissions or deaths occurred within the last 24 hours. Up until now 24.413 confirmed COVID-19 patients have been reported to the RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment . The reports are from all of the 12 provinces, however with 411 (31%) most of the new reports are from the province of Zuid-Holland.
The last few days, care workers outside the hospital can also be tested if they have any symptoms. The first effect appears to be visible in the reports, because 550 (42%) of the new reports concern care workers.
The figures for the last few days are still in line with the impression that COVID-19 is spreading slower than if no measures had been taken. Since not all COVID-19 patients are tested, the actual numbers in the Netherlands are higher than the numbers stated in the report.

The expansion of testing is intended for patients are at high risk of severe illness from a coronavirus infection, and for healthcare workers in hospitals and in other contexts. That includes general practitioners, nursing home employees, care providers working with disabled people, or home care employees who have symptoms. 28% of the confirmed COVID-19 patients reported to RIVM are known to be healthcare workers. The relatively high percentage of healthcare workers among patients with COVID-19 is explained by the fact that the testing policy is partly focused on this professional group.
The age distribution and the male/female ratio amongst healthcare workers is different from that of other COVID-19 patients. Of all reported healthcare workers with COVID-19, half are 44 years and younger, and 81% are women. Looking at the other patients, half are 72 years and up, and 48% are women.

COVID-19 in nursing homes
It is estimated that about one-third of nursing homes in the Netherlands have at least one patient with COVID-19. Over the past few days, we have not seen many new nursing homes with COVID-19 patients added to the list. However, we do see the spread of COVID-19 within nursing homes.
Based on the reports of patients with COVID-19, RIVM took a separate look at reports of patients in nursing homes. These reports have been plotted out over time. Researchers looked at 2 aspects:
1) the number of new nursing home locations with at least one COVID-19 patient (Figure 1),
2) the number of nursing home residents with COVID-19 (Figure 2).
Some reports are filed later. For that reason, it is possible that not all reports from the most recent week have been included in these figures.
Figure 1 shows that the number of nursing homes that reported a resident with COVID-19 for the first time has been decreasing since the end of March. It is estimated that about one-third of nursing homes in the Netherlands have at least one patient with COVID-19. Figure 2 shows that the number of nursing home residents with COVID-19 is still increasing. These numbers only involve nursing home residents who have been tested for COVID-19. In each nursing home, a limited number of patients are tested according to the guideline. Since not all patients are tested, the actual number of patients with COVID-19 in nursing homes is higher than Figure 2 shows. RIVM is working with NIVEL and Verenso to gain access to complete data on the actual numbers. These are patients who probably have or had COVID-19, but have not had any laboratory testing done.

Mortality among people living in institutional households almost doubled
More deaths have been recorded in recent weeks than the average reported for this period. This applies in particular to mortality among people living in institutional households, such as nursing homes and care homes, mental health institutions, residential institutions for the disabled, prisons, and residential centres for asylum-seekers. Mortality in institutional households was almost twice as high in week 14 (30 March to 5 April) as in an average week in the first ten weeks of 2020, whereas mortality in private households was 1.5 times higher. This was reported by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and RIVM based on the national provisional counts of the number of deaths per week.

The total number of deceased persons per week as reported to Statistics Netherlands - regardless of the cause of death - provides a more complete picture of the situation in the Netherlands. Hospital admissions for 129 patients were reported today (current or previous). 142 deaths were reported, one report concerned an adult patient between 15-19 years of age, with underlying health conditions. Not all of the hospital admissions or deaths occurred within the last 24 hours. Some patients are reported later. For this reason, the figures are often supplemented with data from previous days.
31,589 confirmed COVID-19 patients have been reported to RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment so far.
The figures for the last few days are still in line with the impression that COVID-19 is spreading slower than if no measures had been taken.
The daily reported number of new hospital admissions is still declining. The number of deceased patients is also decreasing but at a slower rate than hospital admissions. This is probably because the time between infection and death is longer than the time between infection and hospitalisation.
Since not all COVID-19 patients are tested, the actual numbers in the Netherlands are higher than the numbers stated in the report.

The number of corona patients in intensive care has fallen again, to 1087. That is 71 filled ICU beds less than yesterday. This is evident from the data from the National Coordination Center for Patient Distribution (LCPS). It is the first really significant drop.
Of the 1087 patients, 1039 are in Dutch hospitals. In Germany, 48 (Dutch) patients are in ICU.
According to Ernst Kuipers of the coordination center, there is more room now for non-corona patients. That number has fluctuated around 350 in recent weeks and has now risen to 390.
At the height of the crisis, ICU bed occupancy increased by more than 100 a day.
