Man dies of H1N1 in Orangeville

Dufferin County - A 78-year-old man visiting from the United States has died of the H1N1 flu virus at a health facility in Orangeville.

The Medical Officer of Health with the Wellington Dufferin Guelph Health Unit says the man had had a pre-existing medical conditions.

Dr. Nicola Mercer says what role that may have played is not known at this time.

U.S. man with swine flu dies in Orangeville

An elderly U.S. man who had the H1N1 flu virus as well as chronic disease has died in an Orangeville hospital.

The man, who was visiting friends in the region, showed flu symptoms when he was admitted to hospital on June 9, said Dr. Nicola Mercer, medical officer of health for the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph area.

He died this morning.

"The influenza virus contributed to his death. Whether it did in a minor or a major way, I don't have the medical evidence to say," she said.

She said the man's age and pre-existing medical condition also contributed to his death.

It's unclear whether an autopsy will be done because the man is not a Canadian citizen, Mercer said.

The man is the third person in Ontario to have died after contracting swine flu. All three had chronic medical conditions.

Another 484 new cases of swine flu were announced today, bringing the provincial total to 2,265.

The average age of patients with the illness has been 21, while the ages have ranked from less than 12 months old to 80 years old.
