New Hampshire Sees First Case Of Mosquito-Borne Jamestown Canyon Virus In 2020

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — An adult in Loudon, New Hampshire, has tested positive for the Jamestown Canyon virus, the first case of the mosquito-borne disease in the state this year, health officials said.

The virus is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito. There are no vaccines for it and treatment consists of supportive care...

...This is New Hampshire’s tenth case of the virus since the first report of the disease in the state in 2013. Many illnesses caused by it are mild, but moderate-to-severe central nervous system involvement requiring hospitalization have been reported, including fatal infections....

BOW, N.H. — The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Division of Public Health Services (DPHS) announced Friday that an adult from Bow, NH tested positive for Jamestown Canyon virus (JCV).

The person was not hospitalized and is doing well, but experienced fever and mild neurological symptoms, according to NH DHHS.

This is the second detection of JCV in the state this year. In early July, it was reported that an adult in Loudon, NH tested positive for the virus. That person was hospitalized for neurological symptoms and released to recover at home...

An adult from Dunbarton, NH tested positive for the virus and was hospitalized with a fever and a headache. They have since been discharged and are recovering at home. ..

CONCORD — The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services reported an Epsom adult tested positive for Jamestown Canyon virus.

The arboviral risk level for Epsom will be increased to high. The arboviral risk level indicates the risk of transmission of these infections to people from mosquitoes.

The risk level for Deerfield will increase to moderate but will remain at moderate for Northwood, Pittsfield, Chichester, Pembroke and Allenstown.

The patient was hospitalized with a fever, abdominal and neck pain and a headache, but was discharged and is recovering at home.

This is the fourth detection of JCV in the state this year...
