Nigeria

Nigeria continues to report the highest number of diphtheria cases in the African Region. From 1 January to 2 November 2025, 12 150 suspected cases have been reported, with 8 587 confirmed and 884 deaths (CFR 7.2%). Confirmed cases have been reported from 240 Local Government Areas across 30 states. Most cases are clinically compatible, with only 3% confirmed by laboratory testing. The outbreak has disproportionately affected children and adolescents, with low vaccination coverage contributing to the spread. In Nigeria more than 2 million children are under-immunized, including those with zero-doses, highlighting the high risk of further spread. Reactive campaigns have been conducted in Imo, Kaduna and Lagos, targeting health workers and priority populations. The outbreak overlaps with areas targeted by the Big Catch-up initiative. Challenges include delayed laboratory confirmation, poor IPC practices, limited information, education and communication materials, and vaccine shortages. Discussions with Gavi are ongoing to secure additional support. According to WUENIC in 2024, the estimates show 71% coverage for the first DTP dose and 67% for the third.

Health authorities in Niger State have launched an emergency public health response following reports of a suspected diphtheria outbreak in the Efu Lungoyi community of Masaba A Ward, Bida Local Government Area, which has claimed the life of an eight-year-old boy.

The incident, reported in the early hours of Saturday, January 3, prompted the state government to immediately activate a rapid response mechanism aimed at containing the situation and preventing further loss of life. Officials confirmed that several other children in the community have shown symptoms consistent with diphtheria, a highly contagious but vaccine-preventable disease.

Commissioner for Health, Murtala Bagana, said he received a distress call alerting the ministry to the suspected outbreak and promptly convened an emergency meeting involving key health stakeholders. Those mobilised included officials from the Bida Local Government Primary Health Care department, the Disease Surveillance and Notification Office (DSNO), the Local Immunisation Office (LIO), field epidemiologists, and representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO)...

Kano seeks additional diphtheria vaccines from FG

The Kano State Government has appealed to the Federal Government to supply additional diphtheria vaccines to enable the state to conduct mass vaccination against the disease across the state.

The Director-General, Kano State Centre for Disease Control, Prof. Muhammad Abbas, made the request while addressing a news conference on Tuesday night.

“I want to tell you that we had over 38,000 cases from 2022 till date, out of which over 31,000 cases were confirmed. But the disheartening thing is that more than 55% of those are what we call zero-dose children who have not received any form of vaccination. More than 16% of the cases and another 10 to 15% of them were partially immunised. Only a few of them were fully immunised, which means we have a very big deal in our hands.

“As I am speaking to you now, my team is in Rano. They want to dig out. Sometimes, certain deaths may be due to other diseases. In that situation, we carry out what we call verbal autopsy. We interview the parents and see what happened, what led to the death of these children,” he concluded.

On Monday, the Kano State House of Assembly called on the governor to urgently intervene in a diphtheria outbreak that had reportedly killed over 50 children in Rano Local Government Area.

Kano State Investigates Suspected Diphtheria Deaths

Salihu Ali, Kano
August 26, 2026

The Kano State Centre for Disease Control has launched an investigation into reports of children dying from suspected diphtheria in Rano Local Government Area.

The agency, however, said its official surveillance records did not currently support the reported number of deaths.

The KNCDC Director-General, Prof. Muhammad Adamu Abbas, disclosed this while responding to concerns raised by the Kano State House of Assembly over the reported deaths.

Speaking with journalists in Kano, Abbas said 32 diphtheria cases had been recorded in Rano, including 25 in August and seven between May and July.

He said seven patients had been transferred to the Infectious Disease Hospital in Kano, the designated isolation and treatment centre for diphtheria, while other patients were receiving treatment at health facilities in Rano.

According to him, the agency conducted an active case search in the area on August 19, leading to the identification of additional suspected cases.

Abbas said the agency had yet to establish that all the reported deaths were caused by diphtheria, noting that other illnesses could have been responsible for some of the deaths.

He said further investigations, including verbal autopsies, were being conducted to determine the actual circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Diphtheria Outbreak: What Nigerians Need To Know As Cases, Deaths Rise (2)
by Onuado Cynthia

Nigeria’s renewed diphtheria outbreak continues to pose a serious public health threat, with thousands of confirmed cases and deaths recorded across the country since the disease resurfaced in 2022.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) recorded 61,930 suspected diphtheria cases, 40,460 confirmed cases and 2,151 deaths between epidemiological week 19 of 2022 and week three of 2026.

The confirmed cases were recorded across 300 Local Government Areas in 31 states, with Kano, Yobe, Borno, Bauchi and Katsina accounting for the overwhelming majority of confirmed infections.

The NCDC said only 5,974, representing 14.3 per cent, of the 40,460 confirmed cases were fully vaccinated against diphtheria, underscoring concerns over gaps in routine immunisation. Children aged one to 14 years accounted for 64.8 per cent of confirmed cases...

Diphtheria has killed 23 people in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, and health officials are fighting the outbreak without the antitoxin considered the gold standard for treating the disease.

State authorities have logged 143 suspected cases, nearly all concentrated in a single local government, according to Plateau State Commissioner for Health, Dr Nicholas Ba'am-Nigristos. The toll makes this the deadliest diphtheria emergency Nigeria has reported since the 2022 to 2023 national outbreak centred on Kano, which the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control linked to hundreds of deaths. It also renews hard questions about routine childhood immunisation in a country where coverage of the third DPT dose has hovered near 57 per cent in recent World Health Organization and UNICEF estimates...
