Cholera outbreak kills 7 in Kula Kingdom

RESIDENTS of Kula Kingdom in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State have been thrown into mourning following an outbreak of cholera that lhas claimed the lives of at least seven children.

The development which has been recurrent in the oil-rich kingdom is due to lack of potable water and paucity of decent sanitary system. Kula Kingdom is dotted with oil wells and flow stations and is host community to five multi-national oil companies.

Nigeria: Cholera Outbreak Kills Five in Ogun

Abeokuta ? Five persons have reportedly lost their lives following an outbreak of Cholera in Abeokuta South and North local government areas of Ogun State.

The state government which confirmed the outbreak, however, claimed that only one person died as a result of poor hygiene on the part of the residents.

But, Vanguard findings revealed that, the incident was linked to a septic tank which spilled its content into major water sources in the area, thereby contaminating them...

A traditional ruler in Ogun State name(withheld) and 103 residents of the State have been reportedly hospitalised following the recent outbreak of cholera in Abeokuta, the State capital.

But, the state government however, said the 104 cases recorded was as a result of gastroenteritis attributed to unhygienic condition of the affected areas and not cholera as being speculated .

The Ogun state government, south west Nigeria and the state medical association have confirmed the outbreak of the gastroenteritis in some local government areas of the state.

Briefing journalists in Abeokuta, the state capital, the state commissioner for health, Olaokun Soyinka said Abeokuta south local government remained the most affected with 76 cases of the 104 cases reported.

Cholera is common during the rainy season and is intensified by water waste disposal issues and limited access to clean drinking water. The disease causes vomiting and diarrhoea that can result in dehydration. If not treated, it can be fatal.

Investigation had it that more than 260 people died of cholera in Nigeria in late 2009, no wonder, then that palpable fear has gripped residents of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, over the recent outbreak of cholera in some parts of the town, which has been reported to have claimed no fewer than 10 lives.

The epidemic, which spreads like wild fire, was first reported at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Lantoro, in Abeokuta South Local Government Area of the state...

Following the decline in cases of gastroenteritis or diarrheal disease announced a week ago, The Ogun State Government has announced a continued drop in new cases of disease to virtually normal levels.

According to the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Olaokun Soyinka. "In the week up to Friday, August 2, the number of new cases averaged two cases daily down from a peak of 10 and no deaths have been reported. The outbreak was contained early and has not spread geographically..."

This state Commissioner for Health, Emmanuel Akabe, said one person died of the disease while 18 others were hospitalized...

A local government official in Zamfara confirmed the casualty.

A cholera outbreak has claimed two lives while more than 130 others are hospitalised in Rini Village and Bakura Town in the Bakura Local Government Area of Zamfara.

The Vice Chairman of the Local Government, Dandare Dakko, made the disclosure on Thursday while addressing the families of victims at a camp in Rini Village.

The recent cholera outbreak in Namu village, Quan Pan Local Government Area of Plateau State resulted in the death of 30 people, contrary to the eight deaths recently reported by medical authorities, community heads told Daily Trust yesterday.
Namu, a village along the state?s border with neighbouring Nasarawa which presently hosts over 6,000 displaced persons from the violent crisis in Obi Local government Area of Nasarawa State has been plagued by cholera from which the state government confirmed eight deaths and 61 hospitalized.
However, the acting District Head of the village, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, yesterday told Daily Trust that the numbers had been down-played and that most of those killed were women.

The Lagos State Health Commissioner, Jide Idris confirmed that an outbreak of Cholera in Lagos has killed no fewer than three people.

Idris on Wednesday said that the worst affected areas in the state include Apapa, Ajegunle, Surulere, Oshodi, and Lagos Island.

Of the 13 reported cases, three deaths have been confirmed, Mr. Idris emphasised.

Plateau State Government has confirmed that over 96 persons have been infected and hospitalized over cholera in Qua?npan local government area of the state, while nine persons have been lost so far to the outbreak of the disease in the state.

The state epidemiologist, Dr. Raymond Yuryit, who disclosed this Wednesday at Namu village in a chat with newsmen, added that the nine victims died as a result of poor management of the disease by health workers...

Cholera Hits 7 States, 80 Dead

An outbreak of cholera, a disease that causes unrestrained stooling and vomitting, has hit Lagos and six other states in Nigeria, killing up to 80 citizens of the country in recent times.
The Government of Lagos State, western Nigeria, yesterday said it had recorded about 15 cases out of which three residents of the state had died of the disease.
Weeks ago, nine people died of the disease, which also infected 100 people in Namu Village in Plateau state, north-central Nigeria.
The disease killed 50 people in the northwestern state of Zamfara recently while eight deaths were recorded and 10 others hospitalised from the infection in Oyo state last month.
In Sokoto state five people died out of the nine people infected by the disease in Tambuwal Local Government Area this month. They were all aged between 27 and 30.
In July this year, five people were reported dead after being infected by the disease in Ogun state, western Nigeria.

Again, the outbreak of cholera epidemic has been reported in at least four states in Nigeria and it has so far claimed scores of lives. In the last couple of days, some states in Nigeria have come under the spell of cholera epidemic. And aside those still anguishing in hospitals from the attack, the incredible death toll also give cause for concern. Weekly Trust investigations show that Plateau, Sokoto, Zamfara and Lagos States have been hit by cholera epidemic.

Zamfara recorded 1,117 cases with official confirmation of 72 deaths in two weeks. Unofficial sources said the casualty figure is higher as the official statistics did not reflect those that died either at home or before reaching the hospitals. According to the Medical teams managing the cholera outbreak in the state, Gusau recorded the highest number of cholera cases followed by, Zurmi, Maradun and Bakura local government areas.

Plateau State government which admits the outbreak of cholera in the state claimed that only nine people have been killed. But the community claims 30 people have so far died from the cholera outbreak. None could however dispute that over 100 people have been infected and treated from the disease.

Similarly, cholera outbreak hit Tambuwal and Kebbe Local Government Areas in Sokoto State. Scores of people were killed and the community blamed poor source of water for the outbreak. The state government official statement on the matter, pegged the death toll at 13 by last Thursday, October 24 and total number of victims in the two local government areas put at 152.

Cholera outbreak in Zamfara under control ? Commissioner

Gusau ? The Zamfara Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Kabir Janyau, on Sunday assured residents of the state that government had curtailed the cholera outbreak in the state.

Janyau said that the State Government had provided water tankers at different locations in the state to provide safe water for residents, especially in the affected communities.

Speaking at a phone-in programme of the Nigerian Television Authority in Gusau, Janyau said the state?s Ministry of Health was partnering with stakeholders in the heath sector to curb further cholera outbreaks in the state.

He said it was unfortunate that the cholera outbreak killed more than 47 persons across the five affected Local Government Areas of the state.
