EBOLA IN NIGERIA: AN URGENT CALL FOR GLOBAL SOLIDARITY

Today 20 October 2026, I spoke with the Nigerian Coordinating Minister of Health and Social welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, who informed me of a confirmed Ebola Bundibugyo case in Nigeria. I commend his transparency and leadership. Early reporting saves lives. When Africa CDC declared this Ebola outbreak on 15 May 2026, we warned of its regional dimension and implications. This Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak has already become the most geographically widespread Ebola outbreak in history, affecting multiple countries across three regions of Africa. With mortality approaching 50% in DRC, we face an extremely serious threat. Africa CDC has already begun mobilising support for Nigeria, while intensifying our response in DRC and Kenya and maintaining heightened vigilance in Uganda.

Nigeria confirms imported case of Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease

Nigeria confirms imported case of Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease

Nigeria confirms imported case of Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease

Abuja—Nigeria has confirmed one imported case of Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), becoming the fifth country to detect the virus since an outbreak of the disease was declared in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on 15 May 2026.

According to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the patient is a woman with a recent travel history to Uganda. Her symptoms began on 7 October, four days after her arrival in Nigeria, and she sought care at a private health facility in Abuja on 11 October. Laboratory test confirmed Bundibugyo virus on 20 October. She is currently in isolation and receiving medical care. Investigations are ongoing to establish the likely source of her infection and reconstruct her full travel and exposure history.

So far, the ministry reports that 44 contacts have been identified and are being monitored as efforts are intensified to find other people who may have been exposed. Infection prevention and control measures are being ramped up in the private health facility where the patient sought care.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has activated its incident management system to coordinate response. Rapid identification of cases, timely follow-up of contacts and effective infection prevention and control are critical to contain the spread of the virus.

In support, the World Health Organization (WHO) and partners are working closely with health authorities to strengthen control measures, including case investigation, contact tracing, infection prevention and control, and provision of essential supplies including personal protective equipment for health workers.

WHO urges all countries in the region to sustain a high level of readiness as the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to evolve. Kenya has reported nine cases linked to an imported case in recent weeks. Countries should maintain strong disease surveillance and rapid alert investigation, ensure laboratories can safely test suspected cases, keep rapid response and clinical teams ready for immediate activation, reinforce infection prevention and control in both public and private health facilities, and pre-position essential supplies, while actively engaging with communities. They should also heighten monitoring at points of entry, with response plans in place. Sustained readiness is essential to detect cases early, prevent onward transmission and protect health workers and communities.

WHO advises against any restriction of travel to, or trade with, affected countries, and continues to closely monitor and, where necessary, verify travel and trade measures in relation to this event. WHO risk assessment is being regularly reassessed, to incorporate the latest developments related to this event.

Nigeria Ebola case matches DR Congo strain

The Ebola case detected in Nigeria is the Bundibugyo strain behind a major DR Congo outbreak, officials said Wednesday, marking the spread of the deadly disease to points across Africa.

The case detected in a woman diplomat in Nigeria -- the first there since the current outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo -- raised memories of a widespread outbreak in 2014 that struck several countries in the region.

The patient in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, travelled from Uganda to the capital, Abuja, on October 3, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) said.

"We did three levels of tests, but all molecular. The strain was Bundibugyo," said Olajumoke Babatunde, director of the public health laboratory service at the NCDC.

Nigerian health authorities have said the country’s first Ebola case in more than a decade involved a Ugandan woman who had recently arrived from a trip there.

Pavel Ursu, the WHO representative, told an online press conference: “The information supplied to WHO did not include travel to another country (other than Uganda).”

“The facts which we have received is that the patient returned to Abuja on October 3 being away from September 16 in Uganda,” he added.

First Ebola patients in Nigeria and Kenya might have crossed paths at Uganda airport

By OPE ADETAYO
Updated 2:51 PM CDT, October 22, 2026

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — The first Ebola patients confirmed in Kenya and Nigeria might have crossed paths at an airport in Uganda earlier this month, African health officials said Thursday as they race to trace and slow an outbreak that has spread to several African countries.

Both patients are known to have traveled through Uganda’s Entebbe International Airport on Oct. 3, said Dr. Wessam Mankoula, head of emergency preparedness and response at the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“One of the issues we are currently investigating has been some sort of interaction between the two cases at the airport,” Mankoula said.
...
So far there is no indication that the Nigerian patient traveled to Congo, Mankoula said. Officials from the World Health Organization said the same thing at a separate briefing on Thursday.

FG PROVIDES UPDATE ON FCT EBOLA CASE AS GENETIC ANALYSIS SHOWS VIRUS IS RELATED TO VIRUS IDENTIFIED IN KENYA
Abuja, Nigeria | 23 October 2026

The Federal Government has provided an update on the confirmed Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), reporting that genomic analysis indicates that the virus identified in Nigeria is genetically related to the virus identified in a case in Kenya.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, said the findings provide important scientific information, while emphasising that further investigations are required to establish whether the two cases are epidemiologically linked.

The genomic analysis was conducted by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and the Institute of Genomics and Global Health (IGH) at Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, led by Professor Christian Happi. Prof. Pate commended both institutions for their speed and scientific rigour, while reiterating that genetic relatedness between viruses does not, in itself, establish a direct transmission link between cases.

Prof. Pate stated that identified contacts of the confirmed case remain under active monitoring. Some have tested negative, while results for others are still pending.

The Coordinating Minister said the Federal Government was strengthening surveillance, laboratory capacity, case management, risk communication and infection prevention and control. Healthcare facilities have been reminded to promptly identify and report suspected cases to public health authorities, while additional training and sensitisation for healthcare workers will support the effective implementation of response protocols.

In a related announcement, the Director General of the NCDC stated that the agency would begin issuing short daily updates to the public from 24 October 2026, in line with its public health guidelines. The updates will provide regular information as the situation evolves.

The Minister urged Nigerians to remain calm and vigilant, observe all recommended safety precautions, follow official public health guidance and avoid spreading misinformation or unverified reports. He advised the public to obtain updates from recognised health authorities, including the NCDC, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to containing the outbreak, protecting healthcare workers and preventing further transmission, while calling for continued cooperation from the public and all relevant stakeholders.
