FCT records fresh outbreak of type one wild polio

Abuja ? Three months after a reported case of wild polio in Jahi village, a community in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), another case has been confirmed in Kabusa, Lugbe, FCT, an official said.
Dr. Rilwanu Mohammed, the Executive Secretary of the FCT Primary Health Care Development Board, said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja, that the case of two and a half-year old Abubakar Usman was reported to the board two weeks ago during the immunisation plus days.
Mohammed told NAN that Usman had a case weakness of the limbs and samples were taken to Ibadan for test, a confirmation of the result was out on Feb. 18.
?In December, we had the first case of polio positive and the second case was also positive, so we have three cases in three months.

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency, NPHCDA, has said nine cases of wild polio virus have been recorded in four states and Abuja in the last three months.
Ado Mohammed, the Executive Secretary, told journalists in Sokoto shortly after the 2013 First Quarter meeting of Northern Traditional Leaders Committee on Primary Health Care delivery that the cases were recorded from January this year to date.
He listed the affected states as Nasarawa, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe and Abuja.
He said that there was, however, a remarkable reduction in the number of the cases compared to the 29 recorded during the same period in 2012...

AFTER about two weeks without recording any case of Wild Polio Virus (WPV), Nigeria Thursday reported nine new cases of the crippling virus, bringing the number of cases for 2013 to 35.
According to the latest edition of Weekly Polio Update published by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), this is despite a sub-national Immunisation Plus Days (IPDs) held from July 6 to 9, 2013 in northern and middle-band states.
However, Sokoto State is now on the verge of becoming one of the polio-free states in the country, Special Adviser to the Governor on Primary Healthcare, Ibrahim Jibril Sokoto, has said. While fielding questions from newsmen yesterday, Sokoto, said his optimism was based on the fact that though eight cases of WPV were reported in the state last year, no single case had been reported so far this year.

THE global plan to eradicate polio by 2015 is looking more illusory with the confirmation of 24 new cases in the Horn of Africa (Somalia and Kenya) last week, and five more cases this week.
According to the Weekly Polio Update published by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), the number of global polio cases by August 6, 2013 was 177 compared to 223 by the same period last year. Somalia and Kenya did not report any case last year, but interestingly, Chad and Niger, which reported five and one case, respectively, are yet to record any this year.
Also, Nigeria has recorded two new Type One Wild Polio Virus (WPV1) cases in the past week, bringing the total for 2013 to 42; one of the newly reported cases was the most recent WPV1 in the country with the outset of paralysis on July 14...

Lagos cautions over cholera outbreak
NIGERIA has for the first time gone eleven months without recording any incidence of type three Wild Polio Virus (WPV3), even as she continues to report type one WPV (WPV1) with two new cases last week.
Meanwhile, following reports of outbreak of cholera in some states in the country, the Lagos State Government has stressed the need for the public to observe and maintain adequate personal and environmental hygiene.
According to the latest edition of the Weekly Polio Update published yesterday by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), two new WPV cases were reported last week from two previously infected districts, one from Bauchi Local Council in Bauchi State and one from Bichi Council in Kano State. The total number of WPV cases for 2013 is now 49 (all WPV1s). The most recent WPV1 case in the country, from Kano, had onset of paralysis on September 10, 2013.
The GPEI report noted that no WPV3 has been detected in Nigeria since November 2012 and no new Circulating Vaccine Derived Polio Virus type two (cVDPV2) cases were reported in the past week.
Speaking to The Guardian, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, noted the necessity for precautionary measures to prevent the outbreak of cholera epidemic in the state through high standard of hygiene.

The two cases were reported from Local Government Areas (LGA) Nasarawa and Kumbotso in Kano state.
