ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? Millions of dollars in purse money and the running of New Mexico?s most prestigious thoroughbred race are at risk as Sunland Park deals with a virus that has shut down the track since Saturday.
The New Mexico Livestock Board reports on its website that 18 horses from 13 barns at Sunland have been diagnosed positive for the Equine Herpes Virus Type 1. The virus is contagious and can be deadly to horses if manifested in neurological form, according to the American Association for Equine Practitioners.
