Flu keeps Hazelton high school closed
Hazelton Secondary School in northwestern B.C. will stay closed for at least another two days, because of concerns about the high number of flu cases, the Coast Mountains School District has confirmed.
The district closed the school because of a high absentee rate on Friday, and said it will remain closed Monday, and Tuesday. Classes for the 460 students are expected to resume on Thursday following the break for Remembrance Day on Wednesday.
On Nov. 3, the school district shut down all its schools in nearby Kitimat for the week because of soaring absentee rates, but classes in that community are scheduled to resume on Monday.
The area has a high number of aboriginal residents, who are considered a high-risk group in the H1N1 flu outbreak. First Nations people, and others living in remote and isolated settings or communities have been eligible to get the vaccine in B.C. for two weeks.
