Number of new patients with influenza A (H1N1) decreases slightly in Austria
System Monitoring Avian Austrian announced Wednesday that 34,000 new cases were infected with influenza A (H1N1) last week, compared with 47,000 and 45,000 recorded in the previous two weeks, respectively.
The source said that this is the second straight week with a decline in the number of influenza patients. Meanwhile, in the past three weeks the number of patients hospitalized with more serious condition also continued to decline, registering 252, 209 and 172 cases respectively.
However, the Austrian Health Ministry believes that influenza A (H1N1) is still in the epidemic period in the country, and is basically the only type of influenza in the European country.
Since the first imported case of influenza A (H1N1) was confirmed in late April in the country, an increasing number of infected cases, external and broadcast locally, had been reported. The number of patients rose sharply in the autumn.
A universal immunization campaign was launched in Austria on April 9. According to local press, until last week some 210,000 Austrians had been vaccinated against infuenza, representing 2.5 percent of the total population.
The Austrian authorities called on the population, particularly those in vulnerable groups, continue to receive the vaccine, saying it "is not just for themselves but also for the rest." (Xinhua)
