The respiratory disease has spread to Burr Intermediate School

Commack, NY (SmithtownRadio.com) ? Parents of the Commack School District are being warned about a new case of whooping cough for the second time this month.

An individual who attends Burr Intermediate School has been diagnosed with the highly contagious respiratory disease, the Suffolk County Division of Public Health says in a letter published Monday.

Health officials in two different Capital Region counties are working extra hours trying to keep several confirmed cases of pertussis, or whooping cough, under control in their communities. So far both Fulton and Montgomery counties each have two confirmed cases of the nasty cough that can lead to pneumonia and bacterial infections in infants, and those who have compromised immune systems...

Another case of whooping cough has been confirmed in Riverhead Central School District.

Schools Superintendent Nancy Carney sent a letter home to parents today informing them that the district was notified of a confirmed case of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, in the Riley Avenue Elementary School.

This is the second case of the contagious bacterial infection during the current school year. A case was confirmed at the high school in early December...

CARMEL ? The Carmel school district is alerting parents that several cases of whooping cough have been diagnosed in local students, including one in Kent Elementary School.

In a letter sent home today and posted on the district?s website, www.carmelschools.org, school officials cautioned parents to be on the lookout for the highly contagious disease and to make sure their children have been vaccinated. Adults should also receive a booster shot.

Cases have also been reported in the Mahopac and Brewster school districts...

...The number of cases of pertussis in New York and in the United States continues to increase. New York has reported 671 whooping cough cases for 2012, with 137 of them coming from New York City. New York illnesses make up 12.5 percent of the national total of 5,353 reported cases of pertussis.

New York has ranked in the top three for states reporting whooping cough cases for several weeks. Wisconsin is first in week 14, with 846 pertussis cases reported for 2012. Washington, where a pertussis epidemic has been declared, is reporting 776 cases on its Health Department website and 626 in the MMWR, to place second. Thirteen states have reported over 100 cases of whooping cough. Minnesota and Oklahoma have reported none to date...
