MAYVILLE - Whooping cough outbreaks that began earlier this year are continuing to grow in Livingston and Steuben counties, health officials say.
Steuben County Public Health Coordinator Gail Wechsler said more than 50 cases of pertussis, or whooping cough, have been diagnosed this year. Only one case of whopping cough was confirmed in the county last year. Wechsler said the cases have mostly been concentrated in the western part of the county, in the Wayland-Cohocton and Canisteo-Greenwood school districts.
"We've seen a few other sporadic cases elsewhere, but it's been mostly concentrated in those two areas," she said...

MAYVILLE - Chautauqua County Public Health Director Christine Schuyler said pertussis, or whooping cough, continues to be diagnosed in Chautauqua County.

Rochester and Monroe County have not escaped the whooping cough, or pertussis, outbreak that has plagued New York State this year. A spokesperson for the New York State Health Department provided the latest numbers for Monroe County today in a compilation of all New York counties. The figures are preliminary and can change, and the latest data is through mid-November 2012.
The county has reported 97 whooping cough cases to the state in 2012. This is not a modern record, since the county reported 162 in 2004. It is far above 2008, however, when Monroe County reported a mere 6 pertussis cases...

With just four weeks left in 2012, the release of the week 48 MMWR by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on December 6 showed little improvement in New York's whooping cough, or pertussis, outbreak. Through December 1, the latest data available, New York continues to rank fourth nationally in the number of reported cases of the highly contagious respiratory illness. The state is averaging 49 new reports of pertussis per week over the last ten weeks, with a total of 2,919 reported for the year...
