Measles cases on the rise

Health authorities in the Bay of Plenty are on high alert with more cases of measles being reported.

Since mid-December 2013 the Bay of Plenty has recorded 18 confirmed cases, with three being reported to Toi Te Ora Public Heath this month.

Toi Te Ora Public Health includes the Tauranga, Whakatane, Rotorua and Taupo areas.

Nationally, there have been 250 cases since December, with 40 recorded in hospitals and no deaths.

Since between July 5 and July 16 there have been 13 new cases nationally.

Medical Officer of Health Dr Jim Miller says there have been some more cases locally...

PRECAUTIONS are being taken by Gisborne medical staff after a schoolboy returned home from the Waikato region with measles.

?This young chap unfortunately was not immunised and must have come into contact with someone with measles?, said Dr Bruce Duncan, Tairawhiti District Health medical officer of health...

...The Ministry of Health said that between December and Friday there had been 260 measles cases reported in New Zealand, with 113 in Auckland, 112 in Waikato, 18 in Bay of Plenty/Lakes, 11 in Hawke?s Bay, four in Wellington, one in Nelson-Marlborough and one in Taranaki...

Waikato District Health Board?s Population Health has been notified of 114 confirmed measles cases to date (23 July 2014). Over a third of the confirmed cases are household contacts of a confirmed case and were already placed in quarantine before they were unwell.

Approximately 80 per cent of cases are aged between 10 and 20 years. Of the others, 15 per cent are aged under 10 years and 5 per cent over 30 years, and are mostly close contacts of confirmed cases in quarantine as they were not vaccinated.

Nine cases have been hospitalised but are now well.

Of the 114 cases, the vast majority are unimmunised; only four are fully immunised...

Measles reaches Northland

Measles has arrived in the North and health officials are checking more than 120 people who have come into contact with the region's first confirmed case of the infectious disease.

Measles has been confirmed in an unimmunised child in Northland this week after the child had been in contact with children from the Waikato, where there has been a large measles outbreak with cases still being reported.

Northland District Health Board medical officer of health Dr Clair Mills said a family with confirmed measles from the Waikato recently visited people living in Northland, despite having been asked to self-isolate and stay away from others...

Northland DHB has confirmed six further cases of measles in Northland. The unimmunised children affected reside in the Hokianga, and had been in contact with the first case reported on July 29.

There has been only one case of measles notified to Waikato District Health Board?s Population Health in the last week.

The case was a household contact of a laboratory confirmed case and was already in quarantine.

Medical officer of health Dr Anita Bell said Population Health had been notified of 125 confirmed measles cases since the latest outbreak started in June.

Almost half of the confirmed cases are household contacts of a confirmed case and were already placed in quarantine before they were unwell...

Auckland measles outbreak over

After nearly three months with no new confirmed cases, Auckland?s measles outbreak is officially over.

With measles still in the Waikato and spreading into Northland, however, Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS) urges Aucklanders to remain vigilant and to get immunised.

?There are recent measles cases both north and south of Auckland, and once it gets into an unprotected population, it moves fast. During the Auckland outbreak, for instance, measles spread rapidly through the Westlake Boys High School community, ultimately infecting 52 students, teachers and other contacts,? says Dr Hoskins.

In the end, says Dr Hoskins, 112 Aucklanders became ill with measles since January this year...

Measles case confirmed on flight into Auckland Nov 2

People who travelled on an international flight which landed in Auckland earlier this month are being advised that a child on the flight has since developed measles.

The 15 month old, from Taranaki, contracted measles while overseas and returned to New Zealand, via Auckland on November 2, 2014.

The child and parents travelled on the following flights; the child would have been infectious while on the flights.

1 November Sri Lankan Airlines (UL 124) - India to Sri Lanka.

2 November Sri Lankan Airlines (UL 318) - Sri Lanka to Malaysia.

2 November Malaysia Airlines (MH 133) - Malaysia to Auckland (arriving 2350)

It can take 10-14 days for someone who has caught measles to start showing any symptoms. Anyone on these flights who may have caught measles should be starting to feel unwell, if they?re not already, by November 16.

Any passengers from these flights who feel unwell should phone their GP or call Healthline on 0800 611 116 for advice.

It is important to call first before seeing a doctor because measles is highly infectious, and people with measles can infect others in the waiting room...
