Health officials fear there could be an outbreak of mumps after 20 cases were reported in just five months - up to triple the usual rate.

Thirteen cases were reported in Auckland, while Rotorua and Taupo each had three cases. Cases were also reported in Wellington (two), Canterbury (one) and the West Coast (one).

The Ministry of Health said it appeared most of the cases had been acquired overseas, and had affected people between the ages of two and 31.

There was an increased risk of further outbreaks so people should check they were immunised, the ministry said...

A mumps outbreak in Auckland has reached 25 reported cases.

Auckland Regional Public Health Service has confirmed the numbers to 1 NEWS, with the most recent case reported last Friday.

Earlier last month, the Ministry of Health reported an increase in mumps cases "with 25 cases reported between 1 September 2016 and 9 February 2017".

This number is two to three times higher than for the same period in the three previous years, a statement said...

An "unrelenting mumps outbreak" hitting Auckland has health officials appealing to parents to immunise their children.

More than 130 cases have been reported in the city this year, compared with 35 in 2016, the Auckland Regional Public Health Service said.

In 80 percent of cases, the patient has not been fully vaccinated...

Eight of the 138 people with mumps in Auckland this year have ended up in hospital and public health staff are urging families and primary care to check children and young people are vaccinated

About 65 per cent of the cases in Auckland are aged 10 to 19 and overall, 80 per cent are people who have not been fully vaccinated, Auckland Regional Public Health Service clinical director Julia Peters says.

As of yesterday, 138 cases of mumps have been confirmed and, of the eight who have been hospitalised, six have had inflammation of the testicles, known as orchitis. One has had mumps meningitis, but has now recovered...

According to the Auckland Regional Public Health Service, there is still a mumps outbreak in Auckland.

Auckland's mumps outbreak is increasing at a drastic rate with 51 new cases recorded in 26 days.

The Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS) confirmed that from July 7, mumps cases increased from 148 to 199 as of August 2.

Three young people in Marlborough have contracted the mumps, with at least one case linked to an outbreak in Auckland.

The confirmed cases are the first to hit Marlborough since 2014. Two cases have also been confirmed in Nelson.

Public Health South has issued a formal notification about the mumps outbreak.

There have been 12 confirmed cases in Dunedin, most of them at the University of Otago, the authority said in a statement yesterday.

Last week, the Otago Daily Times reported the university was providing free booster vaccinations in response to about 10 reported cases...

Pacific community hit hardest by Auckland mumps outbreak

Auckland's largest mumps outbreak in years is affecting the Pacific Island community worst.

More than 300 people have been affected by the virus since January, which is the worst in 16 years, and more than 60 per cent of the cases are Pacific people.

Auckland Regional Public Health Service medical officer Dr Josephine Herman says people who grew up in the Pacific Islands may not be immunised for mumps.

Countries like Fiji, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Kiribati don't include the mumps vaccine with the measles and rubella vaccines like New Zealand does, she says...

Adults and parents with children at Waipukurau Primary School in Central Hawke's Bay are being asked to check their immunisation status following a confirmed case of mumps at the school.

Medical officer of Health Dr Rachel Eyre said: "Mumps is a highly infectious viral infection, spread by breathing, sneezing and coughing. People with mumps may suffer swelling of testicles or ovaries, hearing loss, breathing difficulties and rarely, brain inflammation...

Northland mumps cases highest in years

Ten cases of mumps have been reported in Northland this winter as an outbreak of the illness sweeps communities in Auckland and further afield.

There have been 440 cases recorded in New Zealand since January, which is more than all the cases over the previous 16 years, after a serious outbreak of up to 300 cases in 1994.

Auckland is in the midst of a full blown outbreak of the mumps, with more than 450 cases confirmed so far this year and the number rising daily.

The huge amount of cases means Auckland's had more than 16-years-worth of cases in just nine months.

"This is definitely a massive increase and can really only be described as a full blown outbreak that shows no sign of abating at the moment," Dr Julie Peters Clinical Director of Auckland Regional Public Health Service said.

Second case of mumps in Hawke's Bay

Parents are being urged to check their children's immunisation status during the school holidays with a second case of mumps notified in Hawke's Bay yesterday.

Earlier this month, a pupil from Waipukurau Primary School was confirmed as having the infection, and this week another case of a Hastings Girls' High School student was notified.

An outbreak of mumps had hit the Auckland region this year with 457 cases reported as of this week, and although there were only two reported in Hawke's Bay the second case confirmed the virus was now circulating in the region, said Hawke's Bay DHB medical officer of Health Dr Rachel Eyre...

A severe mumps outbreak continues to worsen as almost twice as many Aucklanders have caught the illness in the last 10 months as in the two decades prior.

The Auckland Regional Public Health Service says 527 people have now had confirmed or likely cases of mumps in the 10 months to October 5.

By comparison, just 286 people caught the illness - which is spread through the air by breathing, coughing and sneezing, in the 20 years prior from 1997 to January 1, 2017.

"What we have in Auckland right now with mumps is a severe outbreak situation," Medical officer of health Josephine Herman says.

Mumps outbreak could last another year

The mumps outbreak in Auckland has now seen 600 people affected and could continue for up to a year, says a public health expert.

In the past 18 days another 143 cases have been reported.

In early September about 300 cases had been recorded by the Auckland Regional Public Health Service during the year and by September 28 that had jumped to 457. On October 9, it hit 554 and as of today there had been 600 cases reported.

Last year only 13 cases were reported throughout the city...

Mumps has again struck the All Blacks.

Bad things come in threes, and that is the case in the All Blacks camp after Hurricanes openside Ardie Savea became the third player to go down with the contagious viral illness.

Increase in mumps cases in Dargaville prompts Northland vaccination warning

Northland health professionals are warning a mumps outbreak could be imminent after cases climbed to four times last year's numbers.

A spokesperson for Northland District Health Board said there were eight confirmed cases in school-aged children in Dargaville, making for a total of 24 in the region this year.

In 2016 there were six reported cases of mumps, up from three in 2015...

...The outbreak is spreading: More than 740 cases of mumps have been reported in Auckland since January, the highest number for 23 years.

Around seven per cent of the cases have so far been serious enough to need hospitalisation.

The last similar outbreak of mumps was in 1994 when there were between 200 and 300 cases reported. Since then only handfuls of cases were reported each year, many from overseas.
