Several schools are at risk of a whooping cough outbreak in West Auckland.

The Auckland Regional Public Health Service says risk management is being carried out at up to five schools in the area.

Several students are infected at Laingholm Primary School, which has called off its live school production.

Medical Officer Dr Michael Hale says the outbreak is localised in two small clusters.

"In the last month we've had thirty three new cases. It's one of these infectious diseases that waxes and wanes and we don't ever really get rid of it in New Zealand."..

A nation-wide outbreak of whooping cough has been declared
A national outbreak of whooping cough has been declared, as a total of 1315 cases have been reported since the beginning of 2017.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) is warning that the longer immunisations are left, the longer babies are vulnerable to the cough.

And with Christmas and New Year coming up, people need to be extra vigilant as they gather to celebrate, in order to protect young babies, the ministry says.

It comes just days after medical officer of health Dr Andrew Lindsay warned an outbreak was beginning.

Between Tuesday and Wednesday, 21 cases of the cough were confirmed in Nelson and Marlborough alone. Earlier in November an outbreak had medical staff on Waiheke Island, near Auckland, concerned...

There have been no new reported cases of whooping cough in Northland in recent days although the Ministry of Health has declared a national outbreak.

In Northland, so far this year there have been 48 notifications of whooping cough compared with nine last year and 36 in 2015. Twenty-five of this year's cases were from the Ngunguru area, one a baby requiring hospitalisation...
