Veterinarian Purusottam Pradhan said the chickens have died after being infected with the virus. It spreads through faeces and dead tissues of the infected birds.​

As Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) has been detected in two blocks of Odisha’s Puri district leading to culling of nearly 20,000 chickens, the health department has directed authorities in Puri district to strengthen surveillance for protection of human health.

“…The virus can spread from infected birds to human through inhalation… There is no definite evidence of human-to-human transmission,” said director public health Nilakantha Mishra in a letter to Puri chief district medical officer.

The health authorities have been directed to keep close coordination with other departments for collection of early warning reports of unexplained bird deaths.

After reports of deaths of chickens at a poultry farm in Pipli came up, nearly 20,000 chickens had been culled in Pipli and Satyabadi areas in Puri in the last three days by 13 state government teams.

Bird flu outbreak suspected in Kendrapara, Puri continues to be hotspot

After Pipili, bird flu menace gripped Delanga area in Puri. The culling operation was reportedly initiated in the area after sample collected from one Sumitra Samantray’s chicken farm at Motari panchayat in the area was tested positive and H5N1 strain of avian influenza or bird flu.

As per reports, around 3,200 chickens were culled by the Rapid Response Teams (RRTs). Apart from this, the culling operation will be carried out in around 74 chicken farms in five gram pachayats located inside one km periphery of Sumitra Samantray’s chicken farm. As many as 10 RRTs have been engaged in the process.

Notably, Pipili and Delanga blocks in Puri district have turned into hotspots for bird flu. The district administration has kept a strong vigil on the chicken farms in the area.

Meanwhile, chicken culling has also been initiated in Balipada panchayat under Nimapara block in the district. Members of the Rapid Response Teams have started culling operations at the chicken farm of Manoranjan Dash in the village. In the first phase, around 2,000 chickens have been culled. A target has been set to cull around 10,000 chickens in the peripheral area of the farm tomorrow.

Meanwhile, suspicion of the bird flu outbreak in Kendrapara grew after dead chickens packed in sacks were found on the road at Baikia village under Derabis police station in the district. However, it is yet to be ascertained why the dead chickens were thrown on the road. ​Bhubaneswar(02/09/2024): A high level meeting through video conferencing was convened on Monday to discuss the status of Control & Containment of recent Avian Influenza outbreak.

Manoj Ahuja, Chief Secretary of Odisha, Alaka Upadhyay, Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), Government of India, senior officers from Government of India and from the Department of Forest, Environment & CC, Health & Family Welfare, Fisheries & Animal Resources Development, Government of Odisha, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation and Collectors of Puri, Kendrapada & Khordha attended the meeting. Outbreak of Avian Influenza has been confirmed at four epicentres in Pipili, Satyabadi, Nimapada & Delanga Block of Puri district only.
The control & containment operation is being carried out as per the Action Plan of Government of India.​
The Control and Containment Operation in the infected zone of epicentres at Pipili & Satyabadi has been completed.​
The process is under progress at the epicentres of Delanga & Nimapada block.​
A total of 51 Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) are engaged in culling, disposal of birds & sanitation in infected zone.​
Till now 35,329 birds.​
Total 84 eggs and 15380 kg of poultry feed has been destroyed.
A sum of Rs.10, 94, 572 has been given to the farmers as compensation for culling of birds and destruction of eggs and poultry feed.​
The Chief Secretary instructed to take up massive public awareness, intensify clinical surveillance in nearby area, preventing the entry of poultry, feed & poultry related products to the affected gram panchayat/block.
A sampling plan shall be prepared for collection of serum sample and sending regular samples to designated laboratories for surveillance.​
The deep burial site shall be protected and those sites shall be mapped & uploaded in portal.
The Health & Family Welfare Department,Odisha and BMC was advised to carry out public awareness activities to prevent the spread of scare in public.
The Secretary, DAHD, Government of India assured for all type of support to the state for control & containment of the outbreak.​
A central team will visit the state on 4th & 5th September for further monitoring.​
She emphasised on registration & mapping of all commercial farms & coordination with Health & Forest Department.
The Government of India appreciated the steps taken by the state government for quick release of compensation amount to poultry farmers.​

uri: Amid the growing bird flu scare in Odisha, a three-member Central team today visited poultry farms in different areas of Nimapara block of Puri district to assess the ground situation. The Central team of veterinarians talked to locals as well as the Rapid Response teams in the areas.
The team comprising Abhijit Mitra, Adhiraj Mishra and Ramasish Hazare spoke to locals on the death of chickens and symptoms. It visited Daspurusottampur, Balipada and Bakugaon areas under Nimapara block.

The bird flu has been detected in chickens in a poultry farm in Kothakusanga village in the block.

Mitra, one of the team members, said bird flu affects chickens, wild birds and cows. Chances of presence of bird flu virus in humans cannot be ruled out. However, till date no case of bird flu affected human has been detected.

The team asked poultry farmers to keep the affected chickens in isolation.
