Union student has bacterial meningitis, school officials say

A Union Public Schools elementary student has contracted bacterial meningitis, a district spokeswoman confirmed Tuesday.

The student at Jefferson Elementary School had flu-like symptoms Feb. 7 and has not been at school since, the school said in a letter to parents dated Monday. ..

Meningococcal disease confirmed as cause of Pawnee County baby's death

The Oklahoma State Department of Health has confirmed that a Pawnee County infant has died of meningococcal disease.

The baby attended Blossom Child Care Center in Sand Springs, the Tulsa World reported online Tuesday and in Wednesday's newspaper. His last day there was Friday, and he died Sunday, owner Celeste Hacker said.

Hacker contacted the Tulsa City-County Health Department for advice and has taken multiple steps to ensure the safety of other day care attendees, she said Tuesday. The day care remains open.

An unconfirmed case has been reported at Union's Jefferson Elementary School. Officials there said they have taken precautions to ensure the safety of other students.

The Jefferson student hasn't been to school for a week. Parents informed school officials of the diagnosis over the weekend, and the officials sent a letter home to parents of the school's 540 students, Principal Kim Wilson said Tuesday.
