Health Alert: People Possibly Exposed To Measles

...A person visiting Omaha last week who was infected with the virus spent time at the Henry Doorly Zoo's new Madagascar exhibit on Friday May 7th. Also, HyVee on 156th and Maple again on Friday, May 7th in the morning and the Super Target at 132nd and Maple on Thursday evening May 6th and Saturday evening, May 8th. The person also went to morning Mass at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church that same Friday and Sunday, May 9th. The church's priest is already taking preventative measures. "We are placing an insert in our bulletins and I'll announce that so all the parishioners can read that and if they have questions they can call the health department," said St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church's, Father Don Shane.

As for how measles ended up in Omaha, the health department is investigating. "They came from an area they had visited before Omaha, visited California and California has a few, especially southern part of California has a few outbreaks going on at this time so that's potentially where this person was exposed to," said Pour...

Nine Measles Cases in State of California in 2010
Look for Signs of this Highly Contagious Disease

Since January 2010, nine cases of measles have been reported in California, as many cases as in all of 2009. As in recent years, nearly all of the cases are known to have traveled recently to Europe or Asia or have been in contact with international travelers; some of the cases have been intentionally unvaccinated children.

The last large outbreak of measles in the United States occurred during 1989-1991, with 17,000 cases of measles and 70 deaths in California. Efforts to increase immunization rates in the 1990s were successful and endemic transmission of measles in the U.S. was eliminated in 2000. In contrast, measles is now widespread in Western Europe because immunization rates have declined. Measles is also circulating in Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe; there is currently a large measles outbreak in the Philippines...

4 siblings diagnosed with measles

...The department announced last week that one member of that family, which doesn't live in Nebraska, had been diagnosed with measles. The three additional cases were expected by the department.

"None of the children in the family had been vaccinated," County Health Director Adi Pour said.

...Department spokesman Phil Rooney said the siblings are Americans who had recently traveled through California...

Boy's Measles Infection Prompts Health Warning
People At 4 Locations Alerted

...The 8-year-old's siblings have come down with the infection. His family made several stops on Sunday when the children were contagious but not showing symptoms.

Officials want to alert people who were at the following locations between 4 and 8 p.m.:

* Barnes &Noble bookstore near Oak View Mall
* Half-Price Books near 120th Street and West Center Road
* Border's Bookstore near 132nd Street and West Maple Road
* Kentucky Fried Chicken near 132nd Street and West Center Road...

Health department warns of measles exposure

Three Rivers District Health Department recently was alerted by Douglas County Health Department about a case of measles in an 8-year-old boy who was visiting Douglas County and who has not been vaccinated against measles.

The initial investigation into this case has identified several public exposures in the Omaha area which include:

* The Madagascar Exhibit at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo on May 7.

* Hy-Vee Grocery Store at 156th and Maple streets before noon on May 7.

* St. Robert Bellarmine Parish Catholic Church morning mass on May 7 and May 9

* Target Store at 132nd and Maple after 7 p.m. May 6 and after 4 p.m. May 8.

An exposure to measles includes sharing the same air space with a person who has measles during the contagious period, which is four days before to four days after rash onset, for any period of time.

"If you suspect that you or a family member may have the measles, we ask that you first call your healthcare provider before going into the doctor's office since the measles is very contagious," said Dr. Jeff Kuhr, director of the Three Rivers District Health Department...
