After two young children contracted measles in the city, Toronto Public Health is hoping you make sure your immunizations are up to date.

Over the last ten years Toronto has seen an average of five cases of measles a year with only one case reported in 2012.

So far this year there have been 4 reported cases, the latest in pair of children, a three-year old and 18 month old (the cases are unconnected). The children did not receive measles immunizations.

The children were at risk of passing the infection to others from February 20th to March 8th and anyone susceptible to the virus that came into contact with the children would be expected to show symptoms between February 27th and March 29th.

What Public Health says is troubling about these cases is that the children did not travel outside of Toronto and it's believed they contracted the virus here, possibly exposing others to the highly contagious virus.

Rising measles outbreaks threaten vaccine-averse

Seven confirmed cases of measles in Toronto, Ontario, so far this year, for a total of 12 in Canada to date, are prompting public health officials to remind doctors that the once-common childhood illness risks establishing a foothold again.

"It's obviously circulating," says Dr. Vinita Dubey, associate medical officer of health with Toronto Public Health. "If we have vulnerable pockets of people in the population, they're at risk of infection."

Dubey is concerned both about the number of cases already reported this year ? on average, Toronto sees five cases in an entire year ? and the fact that five of the children were unvaccinated and had no history of travel outside of the city.

If vaccination rates for measles drop by just 10%, Toronto could expect large outbreaks of up to 10 000 cases in as few as five years, Toronto Public Health estimates.

There's now a bigger risk of infection coming from travellers to and from Europe, Dubey says, because of the rise in measles outbreaks in England, France and Spain...

The Halton Region Health Department says three related cases of measles have been confirmed in Burlington.

People who visited any of the following locations on Saturday, June 8 may have been exposed to measles:

? SportChek in Burlington Mall, Guelph Line and Fairview Street, at 1 p.m. until approximately 4 p.m.

? The Collector?s Vault, near New Street and Guelph Line, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

? Al?s Source for Sports, 3485 Fairview St., between 1 and 4 p.m...

The person in the most recent case was a contact of an initial three people diagnosed with measles...

Reported cases of measles in Burlington late last month have resulted in an Oakville case being reported this week.

Halton Region?s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Bob Nosal, yesterday reported a case of measles has been diagnosed in an adult contact of the secondary case, which was announced on June 26...

... According to Nosal, this new case may have led to exposures in an Oakville healthcare setting and other private locations.

The Health Department is contacting all persons who may have been exposed at these settings.

Measles is preventable through two doses of the measles vaccine.

In addition, for those susceptible to measles, there is a risk of exposure at the following sites:

? Freshco, 2501 Third Line, Oakville on the morning of July 6

? Target, Burlington Mall, Guelph Line and Fairview Street, Burlington, July 6, noon ? 3 p.m.

? St. Paul the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 2265 Headon Rd., Burlington, Sunday, July 7, 8 p.m. mass

Doctors in Ottawa are watching out for possible cases of measles after a child with the virus was treated at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario last week...

Public health still trying to reach families of 10 children who may have been exposed to measles at CHEO

OTTAWA ? Ottawa Public Health officials still want to speak to the families of 10 children who may have been exposed to measles in CHEO?s emergency room about a week ago.

Officials have already spoken to the families of 22 children who were present in the emergency room around the time an infected child was there, said associate medical officer of health Dr. Carolyn Pim.

The 22 children were in the emergency room with an additional 41 adults and siblings. Of those 63 people, 47 are considered immune because they have been vaccinated or previously had the measles. Another 16 people are considered susceptible, either because they had never been immunized, they had not received a second booster dose, or because they were too young to be immunized...

...A child, under the age of one is the second person within a month to test positive for the disease - however officials don't think the two cases are related.

Anyone who may have visited Food Basics on Dundas St in Woodstock on August 9th between 6:45 p.m. and 9 p.m. should check their immunization record, or contact a health care professional if they are experiencing symptoms of the measles...

Hamilton Public Health Services is investigating after a confirmed case of red measles in a Hamilton adult. The case is travel-related but may have led to other exposures in the city.

Public Health is trying to identify individuals who may have been exposed.

Anyone who has visited the following locations may have been exposed to the measles unless they have already had two doses of a measles vaccine, such as MMR or MMRV, or if they have been infected with measles in the past.

Jackson Square Mall, 2 King St. W on Aug. 18, 9 a.m.- 2 p.m.

Hamilton Public Health is expanding its warning for measles exposure sites in the city.

On Monday afternoon, public health issued a warning that Blue Line Taxi riders could have been exposed to the virus:

Anyone who travelled in a Blue Line Taxi on the following dates is urged to contact Public Health Services:

Monday August 19 between 10 a.m. and noon or 4:20 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Thursday, August 22 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

As well, in a statement released on Saturday, the city said that individuals who visited any of the following locations might have been exposed too:

Jackson Square (2 King St W) on Aug. 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Harvest Moon restaurant (80 James St North), Aug. 19 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Crowne Plaza hotel (150 King Street East) from Aug. 18 to 22 (elevators and Saffron Mediterranean Restaurant and Bar)

Anyone who visited those locations during the specified times who has not had two doses of a measles vaccine, or who has not had the measles in the past, is asked to call Public Health Services at 905-546-2063...
