Whooping cough outbreak in southern Bruce County

BRUCE COUNTY - An outbreak of whooping cough has sickened 39 people in southern Bruce County and more than 200 in neighbouring Huron County.

The outbreak began in May in the Amish and Mennonite communities, according to Grey Bruce Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Hazel Lynn.

?About every three years we get a little blip (in the numbers), but this is a larger blip than we've had previously,? she said after Friday's public health board meeting.

Until this outbreak, there were just 29 cases in Grey-Bruce over the last three years.

Whooping cough, or pertussis, has an immunization rate of 90% in Grey-Bruce...
