The hunt is on for group A streptococcus at the Southampton Care Centre after an elderly resident died over the past week.
It's a dangerous strain of the bacteria, the kind that can cause necrotizing fasciitis or flesh eating disease, said medical officer of health Dr. Hazel Lynn. But the health unit is not calling it an outbreak, and Lynn noted Friday that there's no risk to the public.
Lynn said the resident became ill on Jan. 13 and the health unit was alerted when blood tests confirmed strep A, which is classified as a reportable disease...
