Health officials sound alarm over spike in Windsor-Essex flu cases

A spike in local influenza cases, some fatal, have officials urging Windsor and Essex County residents to get a flu shot.

?We haven?t seen these numbers in years, especially at this point,? Windsor Regional Hospital CEO David Musyj said at a Tuesday morning press conference. ?It has put a strain on hospital resources, especially from a respirator point of view.?

There have been 97 cases of the flu this year in Windsor and Essex County, with 21 hospitalized and between one and five deaths. Musyj would not be more specific because of a privacy concerns. There were no flu deaths in Windsor or Essex County last year but there were four in the 2009-2010 outbreak of H1N1 ? the same strain attacking now...
