OTTAWA ? A salmonella outbreak has put three children in the hospital in the past few days and Ottawa?s public health department is investigating a catering company that specializes in serving daycares and schools as a possible source of the contamination...

...At midday Tuesday, the department knew of 14 lab-confirmed cases, said Dr. Isra Levy, the city?s top public-health official. Analysis on food eaten by pupils could take days

Four more children have been diagnosed with salmonella since yesterday, as the city's public health department continues to investigate an outbreak of food poisoning that appears to have spread through a caterer serving hot lunches at schools and daycares.

There have now been 27 lab-confirmed cases of the food-poisoning bacteria since Public Health declared an outbreak early this week, including 23 children and four adults. (Two of the adults are included in the tally even though their cases are believed to be unrelated.) Friday afternoon, the health department also added two schools to the list of those where children have become sick: Bayvew Public School and Ecole ?l?mentaire Des Sentiers.

Investigators are still analyzing food from a kitchen run by a franchise of The Lunch Lady, trying to confirm suspicions that its meat lasagna and beef tacos were contaminated. All six schools and one daycare where children are known to have become sick are served by one franchise of The Lunch Lady, which delivers meals to kids whose parents pay for the service...

Ottawa Public Health said Monday there are 37 cases of salmonella in the city ? up from 27 on Friday ? most of which are linked to an outbreak believed to originate from a local lunch catering service.

The public health agency said they have confirmed 35 cases ? involving 33 children and two adults ? that are believed to be linked to a local franchise of "The Lunch Lady Group." Two other cases appear to be unrelated to the outbreak, OPH said.

W.O. Mitchell Elementary School has also been added to a list of eight locations where cases have been found.

Cases of salmonella have also been found at Bayview Public School, ?cole el?mentaire des sentiers, Tiny Hoppers Daycare in Kanata, Turnbull School, Steve MacLean Public School, John Paul II Elementary School and Stittsville Public School.

Three of the cases have required hospitalization, the agency said...

Ottawa's public health department has recorded a case of salmonella in a high school not served by the caterer believed to have been the source of the recent outbreak, it reported in a midday update Wednesday.

The case at Merivale High School may be an instance where an older student caught salmonella from a younger sibling, said Eric Leclair, a spokesman for the health department.

The tally of people who've contracted the food-borne illness since the department declared an outbreak remains at 50, though only 44 of them are believed to be connected via contaminated food delivered by a franchise of The Lunch Lady, a service that delivers hot food for children's lunches...

Two more Ottawa elementary schools linked to salmonella outbreak

OTTAWA ? Ottawa?s public-health department has traced cases of salmonella to two more elementary schools, though it?s recorded no new cases of the stomach bug since Wednesday.

The delay is because laboratories report confirmed cases to the health department but then its investigators have to contact the sick people or their parents and seek details on what they?ve eaten and where they go to school. Mutchmor Elementary School in the Glebe and McMaster Catholic School in Alta Vista are the newest additions to the list; like all the elementary schools and one daycare where a total of 40 children have fallen ill, they?re served by one franchise of The Lunch Lady, a catering service that delivers hot meals for kids...

Lab tests link salmonella outbreak to school lunch caterer

OTTAWA ? Lab tests indicate that an outbreak of salmonella that has sickened 46 children likely came from food served by a lunch caterer that primarily serves schools, according to the city?s health department.

Samples of frozen ground beef and raw chicken taken from a kitchen belonging to a Lunch Lady franchise on Boyd Avenue tested positive for the stomach bug detected in the children and four adults who?ve been sick enough to seek medical attention in the last two weeks, the department said in a Friday evening statement...

Caterer implicated in salmonella outbreak to remain closed another week

OTTAWA ? A school-lunch caterer believed to have served food contaminated with salmonella is staying closed for another week while its kitchen is scrubbed and its food stocks replaced, according to a note its owner sent to parents.

Ottawa?s public-health department identified the bacteria in ground beef and chicken taken from a Boyd Avenue kitchen belonging to a franchise of The Lunch Lady operated by Jonathan Morris. As of Monday, 49 children and five adults had lab-confirmed cases of the stomach bug related to the outbreak, the health department reported ? though the outbreak seems to be petering out, with just three of those victims testing positive since Friday...
