Ontario is reporting 10,436 new COVID cases on Wednesday, setting a new record for the most cases recorded within 24 hours. The provincial case total now stands at 725,841.
Wednesday’s count edged out the previous single-day high reported on Christmas Day when 10,412 new cases were recorded.
Case counts due to the Omicron variant have surged over the last couple weeks. For comparison, last Wednesday saw 4,383 new cases and the Wednesday before that saw 1,808.
Over the last three days, there were 8,825 new infections on Tuesday, 9,418 reported on Monday, and 9,826 new cases on Sunday. The seven-day average has now reached 9,183...

Ontario reported a pandemic high of 13,807 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday — far outpacing the previous record set on Wednesday and ahead of an expected announcement from the province's chief medical officer of health.
Infectious disease experts have said the actual number of new cases is likely far higher than those reported each day because many public health units in Ontario have reached their testing capacity.
The seven-day average of daily cases has topped 10,000 for the first time in the province, and now stands at 10,328. It is on pace to double every five days or so.
Positivity rates similarly continued to spike. Public Health Ontario logged a 30.5 per cent positivity rate Thursday on 67,301 tests, the highest level ever seen in the province. The previous three days saw rates of 26.9, 24.9 and 24.5 per cent, respectively.
The number of patients with COVID-19 in hospitals climbed to 965, up from 726 on Wednesday and 440 at the same time last week.
There were also 200 people being treated for COVID-related illnesses in intensive care units, up from 169 last Thursday.
Minister of Health Christine Elliott said the province is working with hospitals to distinguish between patients admitted to hospitals and critical care because of COVID-19 and those who test positive while in care for other reasons. Daily data will soon reflect that distinction, she said.

Ontario health officials are reporting another record-breaking number of new COVID-19 cases as more than 18,000 infections are logged on Saturday.
Public Health Ontario, which released the data, confirmed 18,445 new cases of the novel coronavirus today, surpassing the previous record of 16,713 new COVID-19 infections reported on Friday.
Ontario's rolling seven-day average has soared to 12,495, up from 5,939 at this point last week.
The province noted on Saturday’s epidemiological report that due to changes in availability of testing, case counts are an underestimate of the true number of infections in Ontario.

Ontario is reporting more than 13,500 new COVID cases on Monday, as case counts continue to hover around unprecedented highs. The provincial case total now stands at 805,098.
Health Minister Christine Elliott said there were 13,578 new infections. Monday’s count is a slight dip from Sunday which saw 16,714 new infections and from Saturday’s record-breaking 18,445 new cases.
The seven-day average has now reached 14,074, up drastically from a week ago when it was at 7,550.
Elliott said there are 248 people in intensive care with COVID-19, which is an increase of 24 compared with Sunday’s report.
For general hospitalizations, Elliott said there are 1,232 people with a COVID-related illness, up from 1,117 reported the previous day...

Ontario announced sweeping new restrictions that will see schools closed to in-person learning until at least Jan. 17, a ban on indoor dining, gyms shuttered and capacity limits put in place for retail as COVID-19 cases soar in the province.
The new restrictions, which also includes slashing gathering limits to five people indoors and to 10 people outdoors, come into place on Jan. 5 and will be in place for 21 days, the government announced Monday.
"The immediate goal of these measures will be to blunt the latest wave so we can ease the pressure on our hospitals," Premier Doug Ford said Monday while announcing a return to a modified Step 2. "We face a tsunami of new cases in the days and weeks ahead."
As of Jan. 5, the government said hospitals will be instructed to pause all non-emergent and non-urgent surgeries and procedures to protect hospital capacity.
Meanwhile, retail settings, including shopping malls, have had capacity limits slashed by 50 per cent.
Indoor dining at restaurants, bars and other food establishment must close. Takeout, drive-thru and delivery is still allowed.
Meanwhile, personal care services must reduce to 50 per cent capacity. Indoor concert venues, theatres and cinemas must also close.
Capacity will be limited to 50 per cent at indoor weddings and funerals...

Of those who tested positive, the Ministry of Health says 1,554 were unvaccinated, 386 were partially vaccinated, 9,255 were fully vaccinated and 387 had an unknown vaccination status...

One death previously added to the provincial tally was removed Wednesday, leading to a net increase in COVID-19 deaths of 13. Eighty-one people have died of COVID-19 in the past seven weeks.
Meanwhile, hospitalizations due to COVID-19 continue to rise, with more children seeking care in hospital due to COVID-19 symptoms.
Public Health Ontario says there are 33 children under the age of four with COVID-19 in hospital today, representing more than 10 per cent of all child admissions to hospital due to COVID-19 for the entire length of the pandemic (313).
There are also nine children aged 5 to 11 in hospital due to COVID-19, when there have only been 91 admissions to hospital in this age category for the entire length of the pandemic.
To accommodate all of these new patients, hospitals are pausing non-emergent surgeries, including certain cardiac and cancer procedures, for much of the month.
There are 288 people in intensive care for treatment of COVID-19 symptoms today, up 22 from yesterday and 88 from one week ago.
Of the ICU patients, 138 were breathing with the help of a ventilator, up 10 from Tuesday.

There are 288 people in intensive care for treatment of COVID-19 symptoms today, up 22 from yesterday and 88 from one week ago.
Of the ICU patients, 138 were breathing with the help of a ventilator, up 10 from Tuesday.
The all-time record high for COVID-19 admissions to Ontario hospitals occurred on April 22 when there were 2,350 patients admitted...

Ontario recorded 20 more deaths linked to COVID-19 today, the highest single-day death toll logged since late May, as virus-related hospitalizations continue to climb in the province.
According to the latest data, there are now 2,279 COVID-19 patients receiving treatment in hospital in Ontario, up from 2,081 on Wednesday.
The province says of the patients currently receiving treatment in hospital, 319 are in intensive care, up from 200 just seven days ago.
Another 20 virus-related deaths were confirmed today, the highest single-day death toll reported since May 29, 2021, when 22 deaths were logged.
Outbreaks in long-term care homes in Ontario also jumped to 291 today, up from 254 on Wednesday.
Ontario labs confirmed 13,339 new cases of the virus today but with limited test capacity being reserved exclusively for select groups, most members of the public do not have access to a COVID-19 test and as a result, the number of new cases in the province each day is likely substantially higher than what is being reported. The new cases today involve 1,797 who are unvaccinated, 452 who are partially immunized, 10,648 fully vaccinated Ontarians, and 442 with an unknown vaccination status...

Ontario reported a pandemic high of 2,472 people with COVID-19 in hospital on Friday, as the number of admissions to intensive care increased again.
The previous high of 2,360 hospitalizations came on April 20, 2021, during the height of the third wave driven by the Delta variant.
Friday's hospitalization figure is up from 2,279 yesterday and 1,144 at the same time last week — a 116 per cent jump.
There are also 338 patients with COVID-19 in ICUs, up from 205 last Friday. According to Critical Care Services Ontario, 57 more adults with the illness were admitted to intensive care on Thursday...
...The Ministry of Health also reported this morning the deaths of 42 more people with COVID-19. In a statement, a ministry spokesperson said that the 42 deaths occurred "over the span of 10 days" and were included in today's figures due a data catch-up by the province...

Ontario is reporting 30 more deaths linked to COVID-19 today, the highest daily death toll confirmed in the province since May.
Provincial health officials say there are now 2,594 patients with COVID-19 in hospital, up from 2,472 on Friday.
Officials say the number of patients with COVID-19 in intensive care jumped to 385 today, up from 338 patients on Friday. There are now 219 patients with COVID-19 breathing with the assistance of a ventilator.
Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott said of those in the ICU, 248 are not fully vaccinated or have an unknown vaccination status while 137 are fully immunized.
The 30 deaths recorded today is the highest number of virus-related fatalities reported in a 24-hour period since May 22, when 31 deaths were logged in the province.
