Record number of patients at Ottawa Hospital have VRE superbug

OTTAWA ? A record 360 patients at The Ottawa Hospital have been diagnosed with the antibiotic-resistant bacteria known as VRE, and the hospital is counting on the opening later this month of a newly renovated unit to contain the outbreak.
After moving patients who have contracted the infection into the new unit at the Civic campus, the hospital expects to close and thoroughly disinfect the ward that has been a source of the outbreak, said Dr. James Worthington, vice-president of patient safety.
Compared with last year, when the hospital reported 50 VRE cases, the number of patients with the superbug has jumped sevenfold.
Not all patients who are diagnosed with VRE go on to develop symptoms; many don?t become symptomatic until after they are discharged...
