Diarrhoea claims two lives, affects many in Balasore

Two persons have reportedly died due to diarrhoea and several others have been affected in the Bhograi area during the thirteen-day annual Chadak Mela of Baba Chandeswar.
Like previous years, lakhs of devotees, from both the State and neighbouring States, congregated at the famous Shiva temple on the last three days. Outbreak of the water-borne disease was reported after that.
As per sources, while some of the affected have been admitted to the Government health centres, others are being treated by the local quacks.
However, the district authorities claim that the situation is under control and they are taking all necessary steps to combat the situation.
?We have rushed our medical teams with all disinfecting materials to the affected GPs of the blocks and have supplied adequate medicines at the health centres,? informed CDMO Gita Das, admitting that two deaths have taken place and around 22 being treated.
She also said that the reason behind the outbreak was the contamination of water bodies used by the villagers.
The deceased have been identified as Kalia Patra of Badapahi and Jyotshna Singh of Jaleswarpur.
While the affected villages are Duela, Palasia, Baitapur, Barbatia, Laxmipatna, Bichitrapur, Jayrampur, Mahagaba, Shradhapur, Kusuda and Kalahi, sources also claimed that more than one hundred people have been affected.
The villagers allege that the drinking water supply is inadequate, the health workers do not visit the villages and the hospitals do not have adequate facilities to treat the affected.
?The PHD water supply to the Chakabhauri village was not available and the people used pond,? alleged Sambhunath Majhi.
?People of the area, despite warning, use pond water for their needs resulting in the outbreak,? defended a medical officer.
