On the March 22 2011 the National Reference Laboratory (IZS delle Venezie) confirmed through serology and virological testing an outbreak of low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) type H5 at a poultry farm located at Salzano, Venice Province, Veneto Region, Italy.

The outbreak was detected during routine surveillance for avian influenza.

The farm had a population of 90 animals (chickens and ornamental birds) in total. The farm has been put under quarantine and all animals were culled with premises disinfection and cleansing.

The animals were asymptomatic and the laboratory positivity was only detected from samples collected from ducks.
