THON sent out a health alert Wednesday after UHS reported that a third case of the mumps has been confirmed on campus at Penn State.

In the release, it ordered those who are showing any symptoms of the mumps ? tender swollen glands below the ear or along the jawline on one or both sides of the face and neck, headache, fever, and/or cold-like symptoms ? do not attend the festivities in the Bryce Jordan Center this weekend.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health said Friday that it is investigating confirmed and potential cases of mumps at Penn State University.

It did not say how many students have been sick and added that it would release no further information "due to confidentiality reasons."

However, Shelley Haffner, infectious disease manager for the university's health center, said there have been five confirmed cases and 15 more are under investigation. The first case was confirmed Jan. 29. Cases have picked up in the last week...

As of Tuesday, Penn State's University Health Services has investigated 27 "suspected, probable or confirmed mumps cases" at the University Park campus.

Six cases of those cases have been confirmed by lab tests to be mumps.

The university updated a news release from Feb. 23, when it reported 19 cases had been investigated and four confirmed. Penn State mumps outbreak still growing as Blue-White weekend approaches

Mumps is in no hurry to leave students at Penn State University alone.

The number of probable and confirmed cases has now reached 68, said Shelley Haffner, infectious disease manager at Penn State's student health center. She hopes that the end of the school year ? finals week is the first week of May ? will break the cycle of exposures, but said outbreaks at some other colleges have lasted more than a year.

But the annual Blue-White weekend April 22 could increase mumps transmission. The event, which centers around an exhibition game involving Penn State football players, draws alums and students from other campuses to University Park. Haffner said she hopes students will wash their hands, refrain from sharing drinks and stay home if they're sick...
