Lyme disease a growing threat in Pittsburgh region

Two children have been hospitalized this week in the intensive care unit at Children?s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC for treatment of severe Lyme disease, a sign of the growing threat of the tick-borne illness in the area.
Andrew Nowalk, a pediatric infectious disease expert at Children?s, said this year is turning out to be worse than last year for cases of Lyme treated at Children?s.
?We?re seeing yet again another big rise in our numbers,? he said, adding that since 2010 there has been an increase of 500 percent; since last year, it?s an increase of 35 percent to 40 percent. ?We?re in an epidemic,? he said...
