Pittsburgh Penguins star forward Sidney Crosby will sit out the next two games as a precaution while the team awaits test results for the mumps.

Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford released a statement after the 27-year-old appeared in front of the media Friday with considerable swelling on the right side of his face.

"There is no indication at this time that this is the mumps, but we are going to hold him out as a precaution," Rutherford said. "We'll have additional test results in a few days."

Swelling of the glands is one of the symptoms of the mumps virus that has been plaguing the NHL this season...

Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby has become the 13th NHL player to be diagnosed with the mumps this season.

Symptoms of mumps have varied from player to player, but generally they have presented like the flu. Players have suffered chills, fever, body aches and loss of appetite. Players have missed between two games and eight games, depending upon the severity of the symptoms.

Before the diagnosis was announced, the Penguins had held Crosby out of two weekend games as a precaution. The Penguins said they believe Crosby's will be past his infectious period on Monday and he will miss Monday's game...

Beau Bennett has been quarantined after coming down with symptoms suggesting he may have contracted the mumps virus. The forward has undergone testing to get a concrete diagnosis, and the team expects to learn the results of these tests by Tuesday...

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby returned from a bout with mumps, while several teammates were tested for the virus as a precaution...

...The Penguins held goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury and defensemen Olli Maatta and Robert Bortuzzo out of practice Wednesday while they get tested for mumps. All three players tested negative for mumps earlier in December.

"We're being cautious," Rutherford said. "All three of those players are in isolation. Any time that anybody even starts to not feel well, even if it's not mumps-like symptoms, we've gotten the person or player out of here as soon as we can."...
