Encephalitis outbreak not a worry, health officials say

CAMP HILL, Pa. (WHTM) - A student at Allen Middle School in Cumberland County has been diagnosed with viral encephalitis, but the state Department of Health said parents at the school should not be very concerned.
Acting Physician General and Dr. Stephen Ostroff said that while encephalitis is certainly serious for the student who has it, the condition is not contagious.
"Most of the time the viruses that cause encephalitis are not the types of viruses that will result in outbreaks of disease," Ostroff said. "They are individual or sporadic cases of illness and they generally don't spread from one child to another..."
