Islamabad, Jan 13 (IANS) Ten deer fell ill and died of an unidentified disease at a zoo in Pakistan's port city of Karachi.
The Dawn said three white fallow deer -- two females and a male -- and a female hog deer were found dead in their enclosure Saturday.
Four white fallow deer and two hog deer -- all females -- died a few days ago.

Mysterious disease kills three more female deer in zoo

?It appears that the three white fallow deer have died of the same disease as their post-mortem reports have shown similar signs of internal bleeding as was in the previous three deaths,? said zoo director Bashir Saddozai, adding that a brown fallow deer was ill but recovering.

According to Mr Saddozai, Dr Kazim Hussain, a senior veterinary surgeon posted at the Safari Park, and Dr Isma Gheewala, a private vet, had provided support in treatment whereas the autopsies had been performed by zoo vet Dr Aamir Ismail.

When contacted, Dr Ismail said that there was no sign of external bleeding in any of the animal carcasses and that he had never seen such cases during his 16-year-long career.

?Lab results are still being awaited. The dead animals had no history of serious illness. All had been born here and no new animal has recently arrived in the zoo,? he said when asked about the possibility of animals contracting a new infection from a new entrant...

KARACHI: As the hype surrounding the death of at least 12 deer at the Karachi zoo continues, samples from the animals have been sent to the Central Veterinary Diagnostic Labratory in Tando Jam to identitfy the mysterious ailment that killed them.

Initial tests showed that animals had traces of E. coli, said Karachi Metropolitan Corporation?s (KMC) chief officer Matanat Ali Khan after meeting the veterinary doctors on Monday. ?But E. coli shouldn?t have been fatal. This is something else and we need to examine the matter.?
Samples from the dead animals have now been sent to Tando Jam and the results will come by Wednesday, he added.

A dozen deer, most of them white fallow deer, succumbed to an infection which has yet to be completely diagnosed. All the animals showed the same symptoms ? paralysis and external wounds.
