MIRAMSHAH: Dozens of children suffering from measles in North Waziristan have been admitted to the ill-equipped Agency Headquarters Hospital Miramshah, but there is no respite as the hospital is lacking the required drugs and vaccines.

The doctors said they had heard that two children had already died of the disease but there was no information about their identity...

22 Swabi union councils declared measles-hit

SWABI, Feb 25: The Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) has begun a vaccination campaign in 22 of the 56 union councils of Swabi district on emergency basis after declaring them measles-affected.

A measles outbreak has already been reported in the Gadoon Amazai mountainous region with three children falling victim to the acute and highly contagious viral disease.

A suspected case of four-year-old Adil being killed by measles has also emerged.

The relevant officials told Dawn that measles outbreak had been reported in Zaida, Salim Khan, Chaknoda, Maneri, Upper Sadray and Lower Sadray, Yar Hussain and five union councils of Gadoon Amazai belt.

They said EPI teams had been sent to the affected areas on emergency basis for carrying out anti-measles vaccination campaign...

AHMEDPUR EAST - Another two-year-old girl Janat died of Measles in Basti Meh of Mauza Naushera Jadid here while six other affected children were removed to Mubarapur Hospital.

Last week measales took lives of three children namely Sajjad Ahmed, M Asad and M Ilyas in the village while 17 others were affected by the disease. The Health Department teams operating in the area claimed that it was a skin disease while inhabitants of the aeaa termed it mesales.

Five cases of measles were reported from Basti Sharaf Shah near Kahirpur Tamewali in Bahawalpur district during the last week.

The affected children, all residents of Chak 24, were identified as Saleem, 4, Waseem, 3, Muzzammil, 8 months, children of Fayyaz Hussain, and Jahangir, 7, and Tanveer, 6, children of Mohammad Ameen...

Boy dies as measles breaks out in Landi Kotal

KHYBER AGENCY ? A student of Government High School - Waqas, 8 - who hailed from Mirdad Khel died of measles here in tehsil Landi Kotal, Yar Akbar, the other day, uncle of the deceased said.

A local doctor said, ?the patient was brought to his private clinic in serious condition last late night hours. Life saving drugs were provided to him but in vain.

Four other measles patients including twin brothers of the deceased were also provided medical aid.?

Measles has taken the 18 million metropolis by storm, although its incidence ceases by April, Dr Mubina Agboatwalla, Head of Pediatrics Department, Government Hospital, Liaquatabad, told The New on Monday.

?We are a small hospital and we are getting at least two to three cases of measles daily,? she said.She said it was a very infectious disease and could spread like an epidemic.?More alarmingly cases of measles are coming with complications such as pneumonia, diarrhea, encephalitis, septicemia etc,? Dr Agboatwalla said.

?It clearly indicates that either the Expanded Programme for Immunisation (EPI) has not been conducted properly, or it remains beyond the reach of many children,? she said.

Dr Agboatwalla said measles was a viral infection and its ineffectuality was 95 percent. Prof Naseem Salahuddin confirmed what Dr Agboatwalla said.?In one week, I have come across some 7 to 8 cases of measles among adults,? she said...

Measles surge: North Waziristan tribesmen face double whammy

PESHAWAR:

Due to a breakdown of basic health services and security, a large number of children in North Waziristan Agency have fallen prey to a recent spread of measles. In response to the increase in the number of cases and deaths, locals have appealed for assistance and a prompt outbreak-response vaccination campaign in the militancy-hit region.

?The outbreak has become an epidemic as approximately 65 per cent of the children in Birmal, Shawal and Datta Khel sub-districts of North Waziristan are suffering from this fatal disease,? said Dr Muhammad Ali, a paediatrician and medical superintendent at the Agency Headquarters Hospital, Miranshah.

He said that over the past week, more than 10 children have died of Measles pneumonitis ? a severe condition of measles transformed into pneumonia. ?Around 70 such children are admitted to the hospital daily,? Dr Ali said.

He said that the first case of measles was reported on April 15, and it spread to other parts of the agency claiming hundreds of lives...

An outbreak of measles in part of Pakistan’s lawless tribal northwest has killed 12 children in three weeks and is spreading due to a shortage of medicines, doctors said on Monday.

Dr. Mohammad Ali Shah, chief of the main hospital in Miranshah, the biggest town in North Waziristan, said that military operations, power cuts and curfews meant there was a shortage of medicines.

The restive and impoverished district bordering Afghanistan is Pakistan’s most notorious Taliban and Al Qaeda stronghold, and hit frequently by U.S. drone strikes targeting Islamist militants.

Four children admitted to hospital with measles

ISLAMABAD, May 20: Four confirmed and 52 suspected measles cases have been reported from different parts of the capital city, Dawn learnt on Sunday.

Though measles virus has already hit different parts of the country, the sudden emergence of such a large number of cases in the federal capital has perturbed the government as it had conducted a vaccination drive only last year, said a source. ?As many as 52 suspected measles cases have been reported in the city within a span of 48 hours,? an official of the inter-provincial coordination ministry told Dawn requesting not to be named.

He said the affected localities were in the rural parts of the capital like Bari Imam and Budwala village...

WHO reports 27 measles deaths in Sindh this year

KARACHI: As the reports surfaced indicating 27 deaths this year so far under 5-year-old children due to measles, Health Minister Sindh Dr. Sagheer Ahmed denied having any such information and said he would personally inquire into the matter.

Prof. Iqbal Memon, President elect of Pakistan Pediatrics Association (PPA) Centre disclosed that a representative of Disease Early Warning System, WHO Sindh presented a report to the Sindh Health Department officials in a meeting held at Inspection and Import Depot (IID) office some days back that 27 children under 5-year of age had died of measles from January to May 2012.

PESHAWAR, June 4: Children are dying of measles in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to low vaccination coverage against the childhood ailment, officials and Paediatricians said.

?At least 12 children have died of measles in the teaching hospitals in Peshawar during the past one month. Many such deaths went unrecorded,? said an office-bearer of the Pakistan Paediatrics Association (PPA) of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter.

We had communicated to expanded programme on immunisation (EPI) of the health department regarding measles outbreak in parts of the province and have suggested mop up campaigns in areas from where majority of the cases were being reported.

ISLAMABAD:

Officials voiced fears on Friday that as many as 21,000 children could contract measles by the year?s end. Already, some 2,143 confirmed cases of measles have been reported across the country.

According to documents provided to The Express Tribune, a majority of confirmed cases were reported from Sindh.

A total of 737 were reported from Sindh, followed by 648 from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, 582 cases from Punjab, 102 from Balochistan, 49 from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and 14 cases from Islamabad.

An official who requested anonymity told The Express Tribune, that he works closely with The Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI). He said that these cases were reported to the EPI and samples were received at the National Institute of Health (NIH). The official added that it is estimated that the figure of confirmed cases is double of what has been reported. Officials believe measles remains underreported by most provinces/districts...

An outbreak of measles has claimed the lives of eight children in four villages of Torghar district in the past week, according to locals. Official sources, however, have denied the casualties but confirm reports of the outbreak.
Villagers of Akazai tribe told The Express Tribune over telephone that at least eight children between the ages of 8 and 12 years have died of measles in Toram, Shergarh, Sarzongli and Torband villages during the past one week. They said that last month four children died of measles in other parts of the district; however, no preventive measures were taken by the administration. They maintained that if the district administration had taken timely measures, the disease would not have spread to Akazai areas. He added that dozens of children are suffering from measles as a result.

As of 16 June 2012, more measles cases and deaths have been reported in Pakistan than in 12 months last year. Table 1 updates the situation of measles in 2012 up to 16 June; and table 2 illustrates about the alerts and outbreaks in week 24 (10‐ 16 June, 2012). (6100 cases and 83 fatalities - Ro)
As it is shown in the above table that majority of the measles cases have been reported from Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. Both of these provinces have announced the EPI facilities will be providing measles vaccine twice a week for all children under age 5.
