MINGORA: Dengue fever has claimed 25 lives since the virus struck the residents of Swat 37 days back, a survey conducted by The News revealed on Monday.

However, focal person of the Saidu Shairf Hospital Dr Wasil Khan claimed that dengue fever had caused 15 deaths to date.

He said the 60-year-old Raza Khan, a resident of Faizabad on the outskirts of Mingora town, was the latest casualty of the fever and with his death the toll stood at 15.

The local sources said over 10,000 persons had been infected by the virus while the official figure claimed that 4000 cases had been registered till September 15...

20 dengue patients under treatment in Rawalpindi: health EDO

RAWALPINDI: Health Executive District Officer (EDO) Dr Zafar Gondal has said that 20 dengue patients are under treatment in the teaching hospitals of Rawalpindi.

He said 13 patients were from Rawal Town, two were from Abbotabad while the remaining five belonged to Pothohar Town.

Dr Gondal said the Rawal Town area was especially being focused because dengue larva was found there...

The official death toll from dengue reached 19 on Sunday after another patient died at the Saidu Teaching Hospital (STH) in Swat.
According to STH Spokesperson Dr Wasil Khan, 22-year-old Anwar Ali, a resident of Rahimabad, was being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital.

MINGORA: The death toll from dengue infection reached 25 in Swat district as two more patients died here at the Saidu Sharif Hospital on Wednesday, hospital sources said.

Sources said the dengue infected patients indentified as 22-year-old Zahid Ali, a resident of Charbagh and Gohar Alam, 30, belonging to Malukabad died of the disease at the hospital.Official sources said the number of casualties from dengue in Swat reached 25 with two new deaths. However, independent sources said so far 28 persons died of dengue in Swat.

When contacted Dr Wisal said in the last 24 hours, 82 new patients tested positive for dengue and they were admitted to hospital. He said 6376 persons were confirmed to be suffering from the viral disease. He said at present 219 infected persons, including 12 children and 67 women had been provided treatment at the Saidu Sharif Hospital.

The unofficial death toll in Swat reached 40 after another man succumbed to dengue on Friday.
Ameen Khan, a resident of Malookabad died at home, residents said. Saidu Teaching Hospital (STH) spokesperson Dr Wasil Ahmed confirmed 85 new cases of dengue fever were confirmed on Friday, after which the total number of patients mounted to 3,472.
According to him, 68 patients were discharged from STH after complete recovery, bringing the total number of discharged patients to 3,209. ?238 patients including 182 males and 56 females are currently admitted to the dengue cell at STH. Of these, 17 are children,? said Dr Wasil.

MINGORA: As the officials confirmed 87 more cases, the unofficial death toll from dengue fever in Swat reached 44 on Sunday.

Local sources said that three more persons in Malukabad died due to dengue fever and the death toll reached 44. Focal person of the Saidu Shairf Hospital confirmed 87 more cases, adding that 36 persons were in a critical condition. However, he said that 25 persons had so far died of the dengue fever.

He said 31 infected persons were undergoing treatment at the High Deficiency Unit and added that 3300 out of 3559 infected had been provided treatment at the hospital.The local sources said the dengue infection was spreading at an alarming rate. They said over 20,000 persons had been infected so far. They said that the government should declare an emergency and seek international assistance to control the virus...

Karachi, Oct 01 (PPI): Thirty-One more dengue viral fever cases were reported in Karachi on Tuesday, increasing the patients\' toll to 1551 this year, said Dr M Shakeel Aamir Mullick Focal Person for Dengue Surveillance Cell Sindh.

MINGORA/CHITRAL, Oct 5: Another dengue patient died at Saidu hospital here on Saturday, taking the number of deaths caused by the disease to 27 in Swat district.

Dr Wasil Khan, focal person for dengue emergency unit, identified the victim as 35-year-old Mian Khan, resident of Shangla district.

During the day, he said 54 more residents tested positive for dengue at the hospital, adding that 4,050 patients had been admitted to hospital and of them 3,740 had been discharged after treatment.

Dr Khan said that 189 patients, including 101 men and 54 women and 17 children, were under treatment at various wards of the hospital while 74 patients were discharged during last 24 hours.

Eleven people have tested positive for dengue in the city in two days, increasing the number of dengue patients to 2,133 this year, stated a report released by the Sindh Dengue Surveillance Cell on Monday; six people also tested positive in Hyderabad.

The focal person for the cell, Dr M Shakeel Aamir Mullick, said a total of 2,419 dengue cases had been reported in the province so far this year...

The sources said the number of infected persons had reached 327 in the district with the confirmation of 33 new cases. However, relatives of the infected persons said the hospitals lacked facilities and most of the patients were lying on the hospital floor...

Battling dengue fever outbreak in Swat District

Over 7,000 dengue fever cases reported in Swat since September

Health workers are combating an outbreak of dengue fever in Swat District in KP, where
more than 7,000 people have tested positive for the virus since September, according to
WHO. At least 26 people have died from the disease, though the death toll could be
higher.

Dengue fever is an infectious tropical disease caused by the dengue virus. Symptoms
include fever, headache, muscle and joint pains, and skin rashes. It is transmitted by
several species of mosquito within the Aedes genus.

The number of infections in Swat is on a par with an outbreak of dengue fever in 2011 in
Lahore District, Punjab Province, in which more than 16,000 people were infected and
over 250 died.

Dengue fever cases are common in areas where the disease is endemic in Pakistan.
However, this year the disease has been reported in less endemic areas such as Swat,
where more than 1,000 people are reportedly seeking dengue fever tests daily.

The table below illustrates dengue fever cases reported in four provinces during the past
six months:

As there is no commercially available vaccine against dengue fever, prevention is
sought by reducing the habitat and the number of mosquitoes and limiting exposure to
bites. WHO is supporting district health authorities to reinforce outbreak control activities
in the district. It has provided over 3,500 long-lasting insecticide-treated nets and
awareness material for display in health facilities, schools and public places.
The 2011 outbreak in Lahore was contained by the Punjab government thanks to an
aggressive awareness campaign, targeted pesticide use, and stringent efforts to clear
standing water. WHO has also trained health-care providers on WHO standard dengue
case management and prevention guidelines and deployed technical staff experienced
in dengue control to support health staff in Swat.
In Sindh and other provinces where the disease is endemic, dengue cases are trending
downwards due to sustained response activities by WHO and health teams from the
Government of Pakistan.
