As authorities continued to fail in their efforts to curb the outbreak of measles, the World Health Organisation?s (WHO) Disease Early Warning System (DEWS) confirmed on Thursday that seven more children had died due to the viral disease on the previous day of Wednesday, January 2, 2013.

In its ?Daily Sitrep? on the measles situation in Sindh, DEWS Coordinator Sindh Dr Soomar Khoso said a total of 165 new cases were reported on January 2, 2013, from the districts of Kashmore, Ghotki, Shikarpur, Khairpur, Sanghar, Umerkot, Thatta, Naushera Feroze, S-Benazirabad, Tharparkar, Larkana, Kambar and Dadu.

Four of the seven deaths were reported from Dadu, while the remaining three were in Shikarpur, said Dr Khoso.

Over 306 children died of measles all over the country in 2012 and 240 of these deaths were in Sindh alone, the WHO said in an earlier report. It added that the majority of the measles-related fatalities occurred in the month of December, 2012. The WHO officials blamed the Expanded Program for Immunisation (EPI) for failing to vaccinate children against measles and other preventable diseases. ISLAMABAD ? The increase in total number of measles cases was reported from the federal capital Thursday while in rural area of Bara Kahu the outbreak of the disease was reported with more cases coming from the area.

On Wednesday last, five suspected cases were reported from Bara Kahu of Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) that have been confirmed and 11 more case have been reported from Phulgaran village of ICT raising the total number of the cases to 16 in rural area of the capital city...

Measles continues to exact a staggering toll on Sindh?s children in its rural parts, as 13 more fell prey to the epidemic on Thursday.

Two children died in the Sinjhoro area of Sanghar district. A child also expired in the Luqman Shahani village of Dadu district.

Two children died in Thatta, taking the toll of fatalities caused by measles in the district to six. Despite a health emergency declared in Thatta, District Health Officer Dr Agha Iftikhar denies that measles has claimed any life in the district.

In taluka Ghora Bari, eighteen-month-old Hameeda Lashari died in village Ahmed Lashari and one-year-old Haroon Gabol expired in village Ibrahim Gabol for similar causes. According to reports, two children also died in the Pano Aqil city of district Sukkur, one child in Kandkoth city, one in the Nara area of Khairpur district and two in taluka Salehpat...

ISLAMABAD - Four new cases of measles, all of them from Rawalpindi, were reported at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on Friday.

Dr Sidra from isolation ward of Pims informed that three new patients were admitted on Friday and they are from the same family. Total number of admitted patients has reached to 9 at Pims. Rajab, 4, Faizan, 6, and Mahak, 2, from Swan village of Faizabad are siblings.

The doctor said though their condition is stable, they have been suffering from conjunctivitis and pneumonia too. Another child, five-year-old Hamza, from Rawalpindi also came to the hospital but he was not admitted. ..

KANDHKOT: Measles outbreak has claimed more than 300 lives in interior Sindh including Kandhkot district, FP news desk reported.

According to updated figure, 122 children have died in Kandhkot district during last few weeks.

In Sukkur 70, Shikarpur 20, Larkana and Thel 16 and two each children from Noshehro Feroze, Hyderabad and Nawabshah died of measles...

The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has held the Sindh Health Department and the provincial officials of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) responsible for measles outbreak, saying that over 250 deaths of children and over 8,000 positive cases of measles demonstrated criminal negligence on the part of the health officials.

Outbreak of measles, deaths of hundreds of children and over 8,000 positive cases of the disease are evidences of criminal negligence on the part of the provincial health officials, and they should be taken to task for their criminal actions, said PMA Central Secretary General Dr Mirza Ali Azhar during a news conference held at the PMA House on Thursday.

Dr Azhar said the scale of measles outbreak, the resulting deaths and the emergence of daily measles cases from Karachi to Kashmore also show that routine immunisation targets were being missed and majority of the children were not vaccinated against preventable diseases.

Kandhkot measles death toll rises to 413

Wednesday, January 16, 2013 - Karachi?Death toll due to measles epidemic across the country has climbed to 413 as eight more children affected of the disease expired on Tuesday in Kadhkot area of Sindh. According to details, despite tall claims of the provincial and health authorities, measles which broke out from different districts of Sindh was spreading its wings to other provinces. Sindh was hit by measles where a total of 391 children died of the deadly disease and 146 children become the victim in Kandhkot district. In Sukkur district, 77 children have died of the disease so far.

The provincial health authorities have claimed of administering measles vaccine to about 2.9 million children under a crash programme in interior Sindh but the locals in few cities have complained against non-availability of anti-measles vaccine. They said that people were facing severe difficulty due to vaccine shortage. Most affected areas include Kandhkot, Kashmore, Tangwani and 80 other villages.

It should be mentioned that so far 10 children in Punjab, nine in Balochistan and three children in Mohmand Agency have died of measles. The countrymen have demanded the health authorities to take solid steps to stop spread of measles in other cities of the country...

lost to the measles outbreak on Sunday.
Over the past week, 14 children died from measles in across Dadu district. Seven children died in Simm village, two in Meer Mohammad village, two in Heero Khan village, two in Sahib Khan Leghari village and one child died in Chhiddi village.
During a visit to the Kachho belt, the residents told Dawn that the health department teams had not visited their villages for measles vaccination.

Kasur?Another child lost his life due to measles in Kasur on Friday raising the death toll to three in a week. Three nephews and one niece of Bilal Ahmed, a traffice warden, had contracted measles a week ago. They were taken to a local doctor but Ahmed and Ijad died with the interval of two days. Later, the other two children Azam and Tayyba were admitted to DHQ hospital Kasur on Thursday but Azam died on Friday due to non-availability of proper vaccine in the hospital...

Sunday, January 20, 2013 - Jacobabad/Dera Ghazi Khan?A deadly measles outbreak on Saturday left at least 11 more children dead in Punjab and four in Jacobabad while the death toll has mounted to 410 in Sindh. According to reports gathered from different parts of Sindh, three children died in Kandhkot rising the death toll to 151.

Meanwhile, 84 died in Sukkur, 48 in Shikarpur, 47 in Khairpur, 33 in Ghotki, 14 in Thul, eight in Larkana while four children died of measles in Hyderabad. The death toll mounted to seven after the death of four children on Saturday in Jacobabad.
