Measles has claimed 195 lives in Pakistan, especially in Sindh, until now this year. A total of 310 children had died of the highly contagious viral disease in the country in 2012 and 64 in 2011.

According to a World Health Organisation (WHO) report seen by this scribe, 112 of the 195 measles-related deaths were reported in Sindh, 45 in Balochistan, 19 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 16 in Punjab, two in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and one in Islamabad Capital Territory from January 1 to March 9, 2013.

No such death was seen in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir...

Over 6,000 measles cases reported in Punjab

LAHORE: Over 6,000 cases of measles were reported in four months in different parts of Punjab, mostly in Lahore, during the current surveillance drive, said Director Health Services for EPI Punjab, Dr Tanveer Ahmed. Sixty to seventy patients of measles are being reported every day in different parts of the province, he added. He said that 19 deaths of children had been reported so far including in Gujranwala, Rajanpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Kasur and Lahore district...

MIRANSHAH / LOWER DIR: At least 12 children have died because of measles in North Waziristan and Timergara, Lower Dir, while a large number are said to be infected.

The exact number of deaths and those infected with measles in North Waziristan could not be ascertained because of the curfew imposed since the suicide attack on Esha check post, which claimed the lives of 17 security personnel and wounded 40 others. Measles claims six nomads lives

Measles outbreak in a nomad family has claimed five lives including a teenage girl and four minor girls in Adda Bhoondi area near Rahim Yar Khan. Six more children are said to have been suffering high fever due to the contagion.

The dead are identified as two and half-year-old Rashida, two-year-old Bushra, 18-year-old Channan Mai, 14-year-old Naseebo, two-and-half-year-old Najma died while 7-year-old Afsana, 3-year-old Sanwal, one and half-year-old Humaira, 10-year-old Sameena, 7-year-old Javed and 10-year-old Mujahid are grappling with high fever.

Nine children have been admitted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) Children?s Hospital after being clinically diagnosed with measles and other complications like pneumonia. This was stated by Pims Spokesperson Dr Waseem Khawaja on Thursday.

According to the World Health Organisation?s (WHO) Weekly Epidemiological Bulletin ? Disease early warning system (DEWS) and response in Pakistan, 59 cases of measles have been reported in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) so far this year.

According to the WHO, this figure climbs to a staggering 8,532 cases across the country, including 218 deaths...

LAHORE - According to a report compiled by the Disease Surveillance System of the Punjab Information Technology Board and issued on Thursday, the number of measles cases in Punjab has reached 7,794 since January this year.

Five districts ? Lahore, Gujranwala, Muzaffargarh, Dera Ghazi Khan and Rawalpindi ? have been declared high risk, said an official, adding that data revealed that the provincial capital had topped among the other districts with 2,539 cases. There are 691 measles cases in Gujranwala, 430 in Muzaffargarh, 344 in Dera Ghazi Khan and 281 in Rawalpindi.

The official said six children had died of the epidemic in the last four months. Among them three died in Lahore.

He said that according to the reports, 80 per cent of the total measles-affected children were not administered vaccine during routine immunization coverage and blamed the factor the main reason behind the outbreak of the disease in Punjab...

The death toll from the disease in the provincial capital this year has reached four. According to reports, three-year-old Shahnaz, a resident of Bund Road suffering from measles, was admitted to Mayo Hospital a few days ago. However, she died on Friday...

5 more children fall prey to measles in city

LAHORE: Another five children died of measles on Saturday in Mayo and Children hospitals of the provincial metropolis, taking the number of dead to 55, just at these two city hospitals, during the last four months. Around 30 to 40 affected children are being admitted to these hospitals, daily.
The actual number of casualties caused by measles is much greater, however, important record is missing because most public sector and private hospitals are not maintaining any record while completely ignoring the sensitivity of the epidemic...
