UN blames health, nutrition issues for Tharparkar deaths
AMIN AHMED

2014-03-22 09:48:22

ISLAMABAD: The main cause of recent deaths in Tharparkar district is a surge in morbidity and mortality rates among children and adults rather than drought in the area, according to UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Timo Pakkala.

In a statement on Friday, Mr Pakkala termed the nutrition crisis in Pakistan ?a silent emergency? and called for urgent attention and investment. ?The situation is bound to recur, unless root causes are addressed,? he warned.

Quoting summary of the 2013 Nutrition Information System data, he said that 21 per cent of the children were acutely malnourished in areas adjacent to Tharparkar, mainly Umerkot and Sanghar.

He said that reports in early March highlighted a rising number of malnutrition-related clinical admissions and child mortality in the Tharparkar district.

Health woes: Govt admits it cannot access 55% of drought-hit areas
By Our CorrespondentPublished: April 2, 2014

Health secretary says women and children in the area are malnourished.
KARACHI:
The Sindh government says it does not have access to approximately 55 per cent of the drought-hit district of the province, admitting that short-term policies are being adopted to overcome the situation in Tharparkar.
?Tharparkar is the most difficult district for the health department,? said the provincial health secretary Iqbal Hussain Durrani. ?Socio-economic issues in the district have made the situation dismal. Most of the areas lack infrastructure and medical officers don?t want to serve in Tharparkar.?
Durrani revealed that the government had issued warning notices to more than 400 medical officers. ?Malnutrition does exist among the children and mothers in the district,? he admitted.
He made these disclosures during a press briefing at the Karachi Press Club (KPC) on Tuesday. He was joined by other health officials, including Karachi EDO Dr Zafar Ejaz, who said that it was a challenge for him and his team to fix the health-related issues in the most difficult area of the province. ?We will replicate the strategy in other parts of the province once we overcome the situation in Tharparkar.?

Tharparkar tragedy: Extending beyond human lives
Friday
11 Apr 2014

ZOFEEN T. EBRAHIM

As death and disease continue to stalk the people of Tharparkar, one thing has become increasingly clear ? that unless the indigenous people make lifestyle adjustments in the face of climate change, the delicate balance of desert life will be lost forever.

With the desert getting hotter and rainfall unlikely to improve, stress on resources (water and grazing ground) due to increased human and animal population will exacerbate.

Signs of the changing weather pattern have already begun to show.

Take Ramjee for instance. Till a few months back, he was one of the more prosperous herdsmen of his village of Prah, in Diplo, one of the six talukas (others being Mithi, Islamkot, Dihly, Nagarparkar and Chahchro) of the Tharparkar district. He had as many as 80 to 90 sheep, but save for a dozen or so, all died of sheep pox last month. ?When I saw the signs of sickness, I got all my sheep vaccinated,? he said.

Plagued by drought: Death stalks Thar?s children as healthcare remains elusive
By Our CorrespondentPublished: November 3, 2014

HYDERABAD / MITHI:
The unrelenting drought spell, compounded by poverty, poor nutrition and lack of health facilities and awareness, continues to take its toll on the children of Tharparkar.
Only last month, health authorities confirmed the deaths of 27 infants and children under the age of five years. Unconfirmed reports, however, place this number closer to around three dozen.
In the wake of such reports, all efforts and claims of the provincial government have failed to control the spike in mortality. Around 213 children have died since May, this year alone. Most of the deaths have been attributed to the prevalent malnourishment in the desert region ? which is experiencing its third year of drought.

PPP leader admits death of nearly 300 Thar children this year

Published about 21 hours ago

KARACHI: Nearly 300 children have died this year in desert communities in Sindh, officials said Wednesday, as poor monsoon rains and livestock diseases have combined to worsen malnutrition.

The Thar desert, straddling the Indian border and one of Pakistan's poorest areas, has seen an alarming number of children suffering pneumonia or diarrhoea due to a dangerous mix of drought, poverty and poor health infrastructure.

The deaths have prompted criticism for the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), which governs in the southern province of Sindh where part of the desert is located.

A total of 496 people, 296 of them children, have died in Thar this year, Taj Haider, a senior PPP official with responsibility for the Thar situation, told AFP.

High child mortality rate in Thar no new phenomenon, say experts

The Newspaper's Staff Reporter
Published about 10 hours ago

KARACHI: Medical experts based in Tharparkar and Karachi rejected on Sunday what the media had been describing as a continuing humanitarian crisis in Thar due to increasing number of children?s deaths and said the desert region had had the highest under five years mortality rate in Pakistan for the past three decades and there had been no extraordinary change in it so far.

Similar conditions prevailed in other poverty stricken areas of Pakistan including some parts of Karachi, experts pointed out as, according to them, the country has the third highest burden of maternal, fetal and child mortality in the world.

?Thar has the highest under-five mortality rate in Pakistan with 90 to 100 deaths per 1,000 live births. There has been no change in the statistics in three decades,? said Dr Zulfiqar Bhutta, a recipient of the United Nations award on child health and founding director of the Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health at Aga Khan University.

?The desert region also has the highest rate of under-five mortality in the country?
Elaborating the issue, he said that the 1.5m population of Tharparkar with a conservative growth rate of 3pc would likely have 45,000 births annually, of which almost 40pc would be low birth weight.

?With an expected neonatal mortality rate of 45-50 per thousand, Tharparkar should have between 4,000 and 4,500 under-five deaths every year, almost half of them newborn infants.

?If the media is reporting 500-800 deaths in four months, this is not unexpected and hence my premise is that this whole focus is on a chronic longstanding issue that is periodically unearthed and highlighted but needs solutions which are long term,? he said.

311 children die in Pak?s Hindu majority district in 11 months
Posted on 16/12/2014 by Dailyexcelsior
ISLAMABAD : More than 300 children aged under five have died in Tharparkar, Pakistan?s only Hindu majority district, in the last 11 months due to malnutrition and other complications.
The main causes behind the children?s death in Tharparkar district include birth asphyxia, pre-term, low birth weight, respiratory distress syndrome, pneumonia, delivery of babies through traditional birth attendants and diarrhoea, Dawn said today citing a government report.
Tharparkar, a desert district of the country?s southern Sindh province along India?s Rajasthan state, has been in the grip of drought for a long while.
The report was submitted in the Sindh High Court by the chief secretary after the approval of Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah last week.
It classifies the casualties of the children according to their age, which shows 118 children who died were newborn babies (one day age), 82 were between two days to one month and 28 children of 1.5 months to three months and 29 were between eight months and one year of age.
