KARACHI:

The emergence of four more polio cases from the tribal areas and one from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) has pushed the country?s total to 58. In the same period last year, only eight cases had been reported.

On Tuesday, the National Institute of Health Islamabad confirmed the presence of the poliovirus in three children from North Waziristan Agency (NWA), one from South Waziristan Agency (SWA) and one from Bannu...

Final decision on travel embargo to be announced at World Health Assembly session

The ultimate decision regarding whether the current poliovirus outbreak has become a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), and whether travel restrictions should be imposed on any of the polio endemic countries, will be announced at the World Health Assembly (WHA) session scheduled in Geneva from May 18-24, well-placed sources told ?The News? here on Thursday...

...The executive director of the Health Services Academy Dr. Assad Hafeez, who is also a member of the emergency committee, must have had a tough time defending Pakistan?s position, given that not once since 2004 has the country reported as many polio cases in the first four months of a year, as in 2014. Pakistan?s current case count so far this year stands at 58, with a major chunk of cases having been reported from FATA (45), followed by KPK (9) and Sindh (4).

A 10-year comparative study of confirmed polio cases from (January-April 2004 to 2014) shows that Pakistan reported 12 cases during the said months in 2004, 7 cases in 2005, 3 cases in 2006, 7 cases in 2007, 9 cases in 2008, 15 cases in 2009, 20 cases in 2010, 39 cases in 2011, 16 cases in 2012, 8 cases in 2013 and an unthinkable 58 cases during the first four months of 2014.

The total number of polio cases confirmed by Pakistan from January-December 2004 to 2013 is as follows: 53 cases in 2004, 28 cases in 2005, 40 cases in 2006, 32 cases in 2007, 117 cases in 2008, 89 cases in 2009, 144 cases in 2010, 198 cases in 2011, 58 cases in 2012 and 93 cases in 2013.

Interestingly, the total number of cases reported at the end of 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 were less that the number of cases reported only in the first four months of 2014. Pakistan closed the year 2012 with 58 cases, which is the current total in four months only.

2011, which closed with 198 polio cases, has thus far been the nastiest year in the history of polio eradication in Pakistan since 2004. There is now a possibility of 2014 going down as the darkest year...
