Four new polio cases emerge in Pakistan
IANS

Islamabad, June 15 (IANS) Four more polio cases have emerged in Pakistan, taking the total number of cases reported in the country to 82 in the current year, an official said Saturday.

Elias Durry, Emergency coordinator of the WHO?s polio eradication programme in Pakistan, said Saturday that two of the fresh cases were from Khyber Agency while the other two were from North Waziristan tribal agency, both in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) region in north-western Pakistan, Dawnonline reported Saturday.

"These (new cases) are children who have never been immunised before, and all belong to Pashtun areas," Durry said...

Polio may spread in wake of North Waziristan operation: UN
By Reuters
Updated 25 minutes ago

GENEVA: About 50,000 Pakistanis have crossed into eastern Afghanistan to escape air strikes over the past 10 days and 435,000 have fled within their homeland, which could fuel the spread of polio as many are not vaccinated, UN agencies said on Tuesday.

Pakistan's military gave residents of North Waziristan until the end of Monday to leave the remote mountainous region ahead of a widely anticipated major ground offensive by the army against militants.

The local governing shura, or religious leadership in North Waziristan, has banned polio vaccination for the past two years, demanding a halt to US drone strikes, according to the World Health Organization (WHO)...

Karachi's latest polio victim was vaccinated three times

KARACHI: One-year-old Murad is the latest addition to Pakistan's polio count that now stands at 88 reported cases this year, according to official sources.

Murad, son of Nisar Ahmed Khan, was taken to the hospital earlier this month when he was suffering from fever which lasted several days.

The doctor at this small clinic in the Khans' residential area near Gulshan-i-Buner treated the child, but when the fever persisted, the distraught parents took Murad to National Institute of Child Health (NICH), says Town Health Officer for Landhi Dr Siddique.

Once at NICH, the child was treated, and as part of protocol for all children under five, he was tested for the polio virus. When the tests returned positive the Khan family was in disbelief.

Like the other six cases from Sindh -- all from Karachi -- Murad also belongs to a Pakhtun household. His family, which hails from Swat, did not however refuse vaccination, they say. In fact, Murad was administered the polio vaccine thee times since birth: once in March, then again in May and the last time in June. Earlier reports suggested that the child's family had refused vaccination, but the family refutes this allegation.

Despite the triple vaccination, Siddique confirms ?the onset of the polio virus in the child started on June 6.?

Major reasons why polio could occur despite vaccination

Efficacy of the vaccine is lost due to ineffective cold chain management

Due to limited and/or restricted access in certain areas and failure to regularly conduct immunisation campaigns the immunity against the virus in is very low. This mean the virus is circulating in the area and while children are vaccinated their low immunity prevents them from being fully protected.

Malnutrition. If a child is malnourished than the vaccine may not be effective

Five More Polio Victims Confirmed
Jul 19 2014 By Nazar Ul Islam
Total number of infected in first seven months of 2014 now at 99, compared to 91 in all of 2013.

Pakistan’s National Institute of Health (NIH) on Saturday confirmed that five new cases of the poliovirus had been discovered, raising the total number of infected so far this year to 99, compared to 91 in all of 2013.

The new cases consist of a 24-month-old child who was administered three doses of the polio virus vaccine, and an 18-month-old who was never vaccinated from North Waziristan; an 18-month-old from South Waziristan who was never vaccinated; a 24-month-old from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province whose family refused to allow health workers to administer the oral polio vaccine; and a 21-month-old from Karachi who was administered five doses of the polio vaccine.

The Prime Minister’s Polio Monitoring and Coordination Cell has warned that the polio outbreak in Pakistan can only be beaten back if health workers are allowed access to children in the country’s tribal areas with the support of all relevant stakeholders. Polio vaccination campaigns have been suspended in the North and South Waziristan tribal agencies since June 2012 due to the ongoing security threat...
