KASUR-Five children including two siblings, died of reported diphtheria outbreak in village Kul during the past two weeks while 12 more are fighting for their lives in Children Hospital Lahore.

Residents of the village held the Health Department responsible for their kids? deaths, raising questions why the Kanganpur Hospital is not equipped with modern equipment? Why patients are referred to Lahore for treatment? They also condemned EDO Health Dr Tariq Masood?s apathy whose indifference to his duty allegedly claimed five lives.

Talking to media, the residents of Kul Village including Col (r) Sardar Hashim Dogar, Khan Wali Khan said that five children - Afzal, 7, Ayesha, 5, Asma, 8, Beenish, 9 and Tahir, 3- died of the infectious disease diphtheria.

They expressed concerns over the unexpected outbreak of the disease in the village which devoured five lives during the past two weeks.

They termed it negligence of the Health Department, informing that when a Diphtheria case was diagnosed in Kul, they called on EDO Health Dr Tariq Masood and urged him to take immediate steps to control the disease...

Contagious disease outbreak in Waziristan

An alarming increase has been noticed in diphtheria cases in the already troubled South and North Waziristan agencies. Dozens of children have died of the highly contagious disease with no steps as yet being taken by the authorities to control the malady.

Around 30 children have died so far, while hundreds of others have been infected because of a severe dearth of medicines.

Doctors say that the disease has spread from children living in IDPs camps in the district because they were left unvaccinated as most of the tribal areas don?t have vaccinations.

The disease is rapidly spreading to adjoining districts, including Tank, Dera Ismail Khan, and Bannu, where dozens of children have been hospitalised...

Around 398 cases of diphtheria, 9,000 cases of measles reported in KP, FATA

PESHAWAR: Around 398 cases of Diphtheria disease were registered while more than 9,000 cases of measles were reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) this year.

According to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Department 398 cases of diphtheria disease were reported from KP and Federal Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) this year.

The report further said that more than 70 per cent cases were reported from Bannu, while the second on the top list was North and South Waziristan where more cases of diphtheria were reported, adding that other districts of the province were also receive cases as well.

An official of the health department on the condition of anonymity said that because of the poor vaccination the diphtheria cases were increased in the province.

He further added that in the country vaccination campaign has started since 1998 but still in KP and FATA like measles, diphtheria and polio disease were still in the province which shows that the performance of district vaccinators is poor.

He informed that diphtheria cases were reported from North and South Waziristan, Bannue, Lakki Marwat, Karak, D.I.Khan, Upper Dir, Peshawar, Momand Agency, Charsadda and Khyber Agency...
