Sindh tops list of deaths related to dengue fever: NA told
ISLAMABAD: A total of 53 deaths related to dengue fever have been reported from January 1, 2009 to December 31, last year from across the country with Sindh being at the top, Minister for Inter-provincial Coordination, Mian Raza Rabbani informed the National Assembly on Wednesday.
Replying to a question of PPP MNA Abdul Qayyum Jatoi during the question-hour session, Rabbani said more cases were registered during last year as compared to 2009. ?The apparent increase in a number of laboratories confirmed cases of dengue fever in 2010 over 2009 is mainly because of enhanced surveillance undertaken during 2010 floods as well as the laboratory diagnostic facilities provided by the government,? he said.
Sharing the details he said 34 deaths had occurred in Sindh during the last two years, six each in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, three in Islamabad and four in Azad Kashmir.
He said the health ministry had taken various measures to control the dengue fever. Teams were sent to the affected areas countrywide and recommendations were given to the local authorities for mitigation and effective prevention and control of future outbreaks, he said.
The provincial and district health authorities, he said were advised to undertake prevention and control measures for dengue fever through the Seasonal Awareness and Alert Letters issued by the National Institute of Health (NIH) containing information on imminent public health threats and their prevention, circulated amongst more than 600 addresses.
