Pakistan now wants one month to implement travel restrictions

Islamabad: The Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination (NHSRC) suddenly discovered on Friday that two weeks is too short a ?preparation time? for the government to abide by the travel restrictions imposed on Pakistan to curtail poliovirus exportation from the country. In an unexpected development here on Friday, the ministry has now sought a grace period of one month from the World Health Organisation (WHO) ?to allow for a well thought out and effective implementation of travel regulations on Pakistan.?
In a letter (dated May 9, 2014) addressed to WHO Regional Director of the Eastern Mediterranean Region Dr Ala Alwan, the ministry?s secretary Rashida Malik has stated that ?as all provincial governments prepare to implement recommendations of the emergency committee of the International Health Regulations, and put necessary implementation mechanisms in place, we would like to request for a grace period of one month to allow for well thought-out and effective implementation.? Up until now, the government had been demanding relief for two weeks..
