Officials struggle for answers after polio count reaches 46

PESHAWAR:

After the total number of polio cases in the province and tribal areas hit 46, Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) and FATA Secretariat officials justified the increase by blaming it on the usual suspects ? law and order and negative propaganda. However, neither department offered much-needed solutions for what amounts to a polio crisis.

The total number of polio cases in Pakistan has reached 46.

Talking to The Express Tribune, EPI Deputy Director Dr Janbaz Afridi claimed the rise in cases could be controlled with a strengthened regular immunisation programme in areas where children remain out of reach. The next drive which would start next week will focus on areas where cases are being reported, explained Afridi.

He claimed, the health department would ensure 100% administration of the polio vaccine...

...FATA

Blaming militancy and the ?ban? on polio inoculations, a senior health department official said not a single child has been reached since 2009 in parts of Bara, Khyber Agency. The ban against polio vaccines was placed in 2012 in North and South Waziristan by Taliban commanders...

...According to the Fata health department official, a total 34 cases of polio have been reported from Fata ? 14 from Khyber Agency, 14 from North Waziristan, 5 from Frontier Region (FR) Bannu and one from FR DI Khan. As Khyber is centrally located, it has an intense circulation of wild polio virus type-1.

Recent reports reveal another type of polio virus has been doing the rounds in North Waziristan, a Sabian-2 like virus which has possibly infected 28 people.

Three more polio cases confirmed

PESHAWAR: Ironically, as the country is set to observe the ?World Polio Day? today (Thursday) with the theme ?Stop the Outbreak in Name of Our Children?, three more cases of polio were confirmed on Wednesday.

This would bring the total number of cases in the country to 49 this year.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad on Wednesday confirmed that three more children have been affected by the paralysing virus, including two from Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (Fata) and one from Sheikhupura.

A 15 months old boy from Bara tehsil, Khyber Agency and a 3 years old girl from Pai Khel tehsil, Miramshah, have been affected.

NIH report says both of the children did not receive even a single dose of polio vaccine.

In Punjab, a 12-month boy in Muridke, Sheikhupura district, was found to be carrying the virus. Only one routine dose of the vaccine had been given to him at birth...

North Waziristan termed epicentre of polio disease
November 08, 2013
RECORDER REPORT

Terming North Waziristan area as epicentre of polio disease, senior Paediatricians on Thursday said that out of total 57 polio cases reported this year so far in the country, over 80 percent among them are from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa as against four in Punjab and three in Sindh. Professor Dr Tariq Bhutta, WHO advisor and Professor Dr Tahir Masood, who served as professors and heads of paediatrics in different health institutions, told reporters at a local hotel today that there are many grey areas vis-?-vis polio vaccination.

In North Waziristan in particular and other FATA areas in general, polio drops were not administered among children during the last one and a half year which should be a matter of serious concern for government authorities, they added. The government needs to take immediate steps for vaccination and administration of polio drops among children, they said, adding: "Immunisation is a proven tool for controlling and eliminating life-threatening infectious diseases. It is one of the most cost-effective health investments. Vaccines can protect children by preparing anti-bodies to fight many potentially deadly diseases."...

On the rise: Polio cases pass 2012 total
By AFP

ISLAMABAD:

Polio is on the rise in Pakistan, health officials said on Wednesday, as the number of infections in 2013 passed the total for the whole of 2012.

Pakistan is one of the three countries in the world where the highly infectious crippling disease remains endemic.

Opposition from militant groups has hampered efforts to vaccinate children against polio in the country and government officials say that militancy contributes to the increase in polio cases.

?Last year, there were a total of 58 cases but 62 fresh victims of polio have already been reported in 2013,? a senior government official, who works with international donors working to eradicate polio, told AFP...
