Panamanian health officials alert to seasonal influenza

July 27, 2010, 8:34 Panama, July 27 (Prensa Latina) Panamanian health authorities now focus attention on those called to prevent effects caused by seasonal influenza, in response to the forecasts point to an increase of patients.
The Health Ministry statistics show that in 2010 there were already 17,809 cases against 4,870 for the same period of last year.
Epidemiology experts warned that up to that condition in the country as an estimate gives the possibility of a spike in flu for the months of August and September.
As a preventive mechanism is activated an immunization campaign which is already implementing 446 000 doses of trivalent vaccine, directed against the influenza type A, B and A (H1N1).
Coupled with this, are the calls for extreme measures of hygiene and cleanliness of public spaces and to avoid crowds of people and go to health centers without the use of self-medication.
The ministry reminded that children under five and adults over 65 are at risk for complications from the disease.
Similar situation occurs for those working in schools and health areas, as well as people with chronic conditions like cancer, HIV / AIDS or diabetes.
The analysis of the types of virus circulating in Panama is in charge of the Gorgas Institute of Health Studies, based on samples taken on 14 points established in the country.
