Aklan records 151 dengue cases in 5 months

KALIBO, Aklan, June 9 (PIA) -- The province of Aklan listed 151 cases of dengue from January to May 27 of this year, as shown by records of the Provincial Health Office (PHO) here.

Unlike the previous years where some municipalities had zero dengue cases, all the 17 municipalities for the period have cases of dengue, with Kalibo, the province?s capital town having the highest number with 50 cases.

Other municipalities with two-digit cases include Numancia town, just across the Kalibo Bridge, with 14 cases, Ibajay in the western side of Aklan, 14 cases, and Banga and Malay, both with 11 cases.

The rest of the municipalities had seven cases and below, with Lezo and Buruanga having the lowest with one dengue case each...

Iloilo City ? Officials here have raised the alarm over a surge of dengue cases in the city and have called for intensive preventive measures.

Dr. Urminico Baronda, city health officer, said the number of cases from January to May this year have reached 529 with six deaths.

The number of cases is 475 percent higher than the 92 cases with two deaths recorded in the same period last year.

Last month, 168 cases with two fatalities were recorded, much higher than the 19 cases in May last year, according to data of the city health office.

Baronda said the surge in the number of cases could be partly due to the earlier onset of the rainy season which contributes to the increase of mosquito breeding places...

Government hospitals in Davao City are turning away dengue patients from Davao del Sur province because they are finding it difficult to handle the increasing number of patients in the city, a health official said on Tuesday.

In several provinces across the country, health officials have asked the public to be vigilant and keep their surroundings clean as the number of dengue fever patients continues to rise.

Records from the Davao City health office said the city had 96 dengue cases in May alone. From January to May, however, 12 patients had died from the mosquito-borne disease...

CEBU CITY, Philippines ? Dengue cases continues to soar in Central Visayas as the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU) of the Department of Health (DoH) 7 has already recorded close to 3,000 cases and over 20 deaths from January 1 to June 9 this year.

Figures from RESU 7 showed that a total of 2,985 cases with 21 deaths were recorded for the said period, which is 36.9 percent higher as compared to last year with only 2,179 cases and 14 deaths.

Of the total cases, this city continues to top the list with 46.8 percent or equivalent to 1,388 cases and nine deaths. In 2011, Cebu City registered only 747 cases and seven deaths.

Iloilo health officials say dengue will reach 2010 epidemic levels

According to information provided by Iloilo Assistant Provincial Health Officer Dr. Ma. Soccoro Qui?on to the Iloilo-based news site The Daily Guardian, the present dengue outbreak in the province may match or even surpass the epidemic level occurrences of 2010 and 2011 amid the 377 recorded dengue cases with 11 deaths so far this year.

Qui?on went on to elaborate that 2012?s numbers are 165 percent higher than 2011?s for the same time period, at 131 cases including one death.

In a news conference yesterday in Pampanga, Ona said, ?dengue is a global problem and each Filipino has a role to partake in order to eradicate it especially now that it is the rainy season.?

?We don?t have an assurance of 100 percent that we couldn?t be hit by dengue but we could do preventive measurements to stop the occurrence of it. One good example is the program of our agency called the 4S which is search and destroy, self-protection measure, seek early consultation, and say no to fogging,? the secretary added.


Ona served as guest of honor in the ASEAN Dengue Day observance in the City of San Fernando in Pampanga.


Department of Health (DOH) Central Luzon Dengue Program Coordinator Rhodora Cruz explained, ?the annual observance, which started last year, is aimed at strengthening national political commitment and regional cooperation on the effort to control and combat Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) whose cases and deaths gave impact on socio-economic lost in ASEAN member countries.?

Participants of the ASEAN Dengue Day in San Fernando consisted of local chief executives and health workers of the city?s 35 barangays as well as delegates from other local government units and health stakeholders in Central Luzon, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, and Metro Manila.

Serving as the highlights of the occasion were the presentation of the dengue warriors (barangay dengue brigade) of the city government, awarding of best practices, signing of commitment of support by local chief executives, and simulation exercise on specific targeting via the Text Blast project of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA).

Dengue is a disease caused by the bite of Aedes aegypti mosquito.

These mosquitoes bite during daytime. The disease is characterized by headache, fever, muscle and joint pains and skin rashes.

In extreme cases, bleeding of the gums and nose may occur.

Apart from the Philippines, other ASEAN member-states include Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. (CLJD/JGB-PIA3)

Cases of dengue in Negros Oriental increased by 79 percent with two reported deaths, the Department of Health (DOH) said.

The Provincial Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (Pesu) of DOH in Negros Oriental said 351 dengue cases in three major hospitals in Dumaguete City were reported from January 1 to June 16, this year. Records of Pesu also show that there were 196 dengue cases with zero death recorded in the same period last year...

OROQUIETA CITY, Misamis Occidental, June 18 (PIA) -- The intensified information dissemination campaign to fight dengue will continue in the three cities and 14 towns of Misamis Occidental. This, after the campaign proved to be very effective in the province.

Governor Herminia Ramiro said the info contained the 4S campaign which informed the public on ?searching and destroying, applying self-protection measures, seeking early consultation, and saying ?no? to indiscriminate fogging."

The 2012 Disease Surveillance Report shows a total admittance of only 40 dengue cases in the different sentinel hospitals of the province, from January 1 to June 8 this year...

Central Mindanao a 'dengue-1' hotspot

COTABATO CITY, Philippines - Only one of four dengue viral strains, or serotypes is prevalent in Central Mindanao, according to a study by the regional epidemiology center of the Department of Health.

Physician Alah Vingno, chief epidemiologist of the regional office of DOH in Region 12, said they recorded only dengue-1 or ?serotype 1? infections in Central Mindanao, which is easier to treat.

Vingno said there are also serotype 2, 3 and 4 infections, considered the more advanced and more complicated types of dengue.

Vingno?s office recorded a slight uptrend in cases of dengue infections in Region 12 from January to May this year compared to those documented by health workers in the same period last year.

Health workers tallied a total of 1,137 cases in the region in recent months. Eight patients died while undergoing medication...

Dengue claims 6 victims in Aklan

KALIBO, Aklan, June 22 (PIA) -- A report from the Provincial Health Office (PHO) here revealed that six Aklanons died of dengue from the January to June 9 of this year.

Of the six deaths, two each were from Kalibo and Ibajay, and one each from New Washington and Malay.

From January to June 9, the PHO has listed a total of 179 dengue cases admitted at various hospitals in Aklan, with eight of these coming from nearby provinces...

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/21 June) ? The Department of Health (DOH) in Region 12 or the Soccsksargen Region is closely watching six villages in the region due to the noted rise in dengue cases in the last four weeks.

Dr. Alah Baby Vingno, Department of Health-Region 12 regional epidemiology and surveillance unit chief, said Thursday they monitored the clustering of dengue cases since last month in Barangays Tamontaka, Rosary Heights 10 and Bagua MB, Cotabato City; Labangal in this city; Zone IV of Poblacion in Koronadal City; and, Calabanit in Glan town in Sarangani province.

The DOH?s National Epidemiology Center defined clustering of cases as the emergence of three or more cases in a barangay in four consecutive weeks.

Vingno said such findings were based on the results of its intensified dengue surveillance and monitoring in the region from May 20 to June 16.

Region 12 covers the provinces of South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, North Cotabato and the cities of General Santos, Koronadal, Tacurong, Kidapawan and Cotabato.

As of June 16, Vingno said the confirmed dengue cases in the region has so far reached 1,284 or up by two percent from the same period last year...

THE Department of Health (DOH) in Davao Region announced on Monday the 108 percent increase in dengue cases for the first semester of 2012 compared with the same period last year.

DOH Regional Director Abdullah Dumama, speaking in Monday's Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City, said it recorded a total of 3,083 dengue cases from January to June this year as compared to only 1,363 cases of the same period last year.

He said most of the cases are found in areas identified by the health department here as dengue hotspots. They are in Talomo North and South and Buhangin, Davao City, and Maragusan in Compostela Valley province...

ILOILO CITY, Iloilo ? There has been a 279% increase of dengue cases in the province of Iloilo.
The Provincial Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (PESU) of the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (PHO) has recorded 629 cases with 12 deaths from January 1 to June 16, 2012.
Some 144 new cases were recorded with Pavia town registering the most number of cases at 73 and three deaths, followed by Dumangas town with 68 cases and two deaths.
Dr. Grace Trabado, provincial health officer, said that while there was a 279% increase for the first six months as compared to the same period of 2011, the number of cases is not considered to be an epidemic.
?It is still manageable,? Trabado said...

DAVAO CITY, Philippines?The Department of Health?s regional office in Southern Mindanao has voiced concern over the sharp increase in dengue cases in Davao City, saying ?it has become unmanageably high? with 2,447 cases from January to June 15 this year compared with 1,175 cases during the same period in 2011.

As of June 12, DOH recorded a total of 27 deaths in the city, almost three times the 10 deaths recorded during the same period last year...

DUMAGUETE CITY, June 26 (PIA) -- Dengue cases in Negros Oriental have reached an alarming level with 296 cases and two deaths recorded for the first semester of this year, said Assistant Provincial Health Officer Dr. Felix Sy of Negros Oriental Health Office.

The two persons who died of dengue hemorrhagic fever came from the municipalities of Sibulan and Bacong.

Most of the the dengue victims are aged 21 and above, and both female and male almost equally represented.

Sy said the January to June 2012 record is 21.62 percent higher compared to the same period of last year with 232 cases and zero death...

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/29 June) ? Another dengue patient died here early this week, bringing the confirmed fatalities due to the mosquito-borne disease to six in the last six months, the City Integrated Health Services Office (CIHSO) said Friday.

Dr. Jacinto Makilang, CIHSO?s Inter-Local Health Zone I head, said the latest fatality was a five-year-old girl from Barangay Dadiangas North here who succumbed to complications caused by the viral disease at the city district hospital early Tuesday.

He said the victim, who was identified as Angelica Honrado, was already suffering from advanced stage of dengue when she was brought to hospital for treatment last Monday...

Zamboanga City tops dengue cases in Region

Zamboanga City has topped the number of dengue cases in Region 9 registering a whooping 1,487 patients with 15 deaths and still within the outbreak level.

Dr. Norvie Jalani, chief of the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit of the Department of Health disclosed that based from monitoring, dengue cases all over Region 9 has reached 1,952 from January to present.

Jalani said Zamboanga del Norte follows at number 2 with only 222 dengue cases with two death, Zamboanga del Sur has 143 cases with two mortalities, Zamboanga Sibugay has 97 cases with zero death and Isabela City has 21 cases also with no mortality...
