THE number of suspected measles cases in Negros Occidental has reached 70 from January to March 8, 2014.

Dr. Jessie Fama, medical specialist of the Provincial Health Office, said Wednesday that of the reported suspected cases, four were already confirmed.

The confirmed cases are from the towns E.B. Magalona and Pontevedera and the cities of Kabankalan and Silay...

MANILA, Philippines?Almost 4,000 measles cases have been reported during the first two months of the year, the Department of Health (DOH) said on Wednesday.

Based on the Measles Surveillance Report of the DOH ? National Epidemiology Center, a total of 3,734 confirmed measles cases were reported from January 1 to February 22, 2014.

Out of this number, 23 deaths were reported, the DOH said.

More than half of the confirmed measles cases were found in the National Capital Region (NCR) with 1,792; followed by Calabarzon with 820; and Central Luzon with 386.

Meanwhile, still awaiting confirmation are 9,568 reported measles cases reported all over the country...

Davao City highest in dengue, measles cases in Region 11 ? official

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/31 March) ? The city has the most number of reported cases of dengue and measles in Region 11 from January to March this year, a health official said Monday.

Dr. Cleofe Tabada, chief of the Department of Health?s (DOH) Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (RESU) said the city accounted for 688 of the 1,052 cases of dengue and 476 of the 683 cases of measles in the region for the first quarter.

Talomo North registered the highest incidence of the diseases in the city, with 93 cases of measles and 158 cases of dengue, Tabada said during the Kapehan sa SM Monday.

The district reported no death due to measles, although the city accounted for four of the five deaths in the region. The other death was reported in Davao del Norte. Three of the victims were children 0-4 years old...

SAN JOSE, Antique, March 31 (PIA 6) - - The Provincial Health Office (PHO) reported that some 126 suspect-cases of measles were recorded in the province of Antique from January to early part of March this year.

Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) Coordinator Veronica Abella said that of the said figure two cases were confirmed positive, while the other 124 are still pending at the Regional Institute of Tropical Medicine (RITM-Manila)...

Update on Philippines measles situation

In a follow up to a report last month, the number of cases of measles reported in the Philippines has jumped to 21,336 confirmed and suspected cases from Jan. 1 to Mar. 20, 2014, according to the latest World Health Organization (WHO) Measles-Rubella Bulletin.

This is up 2,219 cases from mid-February to mid- March. In addition, the death toll from the measles outbreak has tripled from 23 fatalities on Feb. 15, 2014, to 69 deaths reported on Mar. 20, 2014. COTABATO CITY, Philippines ? The health department of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao declared on Tuesday a measles outbreak in Maguindanao and launched an inquiry on why field officials failed to disclose the 37 cases from January to April this year.

Kadil Sinolinding Jr., ARMM?s regional health secretary, announced over Catholic station dxMS here that 37 Maguindanao residents had been afflicted with measles from January to April this year, but no report about it ever reached the regional government.

?I have learned from a fellow physician that for April (2014) alone, there were 12 measles cases in the province,? Sinolinding told dxMS via mobile phone Tuesday morning...

SURIGAO CITY (MindaNews/06 May) ? A measles outbreak was declared in the city on Saturday after the disease was found to have downed several persons, mostly children, an official said.

Romulo Ybiernas, chief epidemiologist at the City Health Office said the number of victims had reached 124 cases as of Monday.

Ybiernas added one patient died last April 2 in a private hospital here.

He said their office recorded some 20 cases of measles every week...

160 measles cases prompt vaccination drive in Surigao City

A large-scale measles vaccination drive is now ongoing in Surigao City after local health authorities recorded a rise in the number of cases, a Mindanao news site reported Saturday.

Surigao City health officials had declared a measles outbreak on May 3 due to the number of cases, according to a report on MindaNews.

City information officer Annette Villaces said at least 160 people, mostly children, have been affected by measles from January 1 to May 13, the report added...

The number of measles cases in the Philippines continues to rise according to data from the World Health Organization Western Pacific Region (WHO-WPR) and countries like the United States and Australia warn the public about travel to the archipelago.

According to the WPR, the number of cases as of the end of April is now at 40,657 (31,508 suspected and 9,149 confirmed), up 8,627 cases from the end of March 2014.

Governmental health bodies in the United States and Australia have put out specific warning concerning traveling to the Philippines and the measles risk. In the US, measles are at a 20 year high and assistant surgeon general and director of CDC?s National Center for Immunizations and Respiratory Diseases, Dr. Anne Schuchat said, ?Many of the clusters in the U.S. began following travel to the Philippines where a large outbreak has been occurring since October 2013.?

SOME 43 inmates at the Cebu Provincial and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) are displaying measles-like symptoms, prompting the Regional Epidemiological Surveillance Unit (Resu) 7 to monitor their condition.

Renan Cimafranca, head of Resu 7, said there were initially 22 cases last week.

He considered the sudden jump to be of epidemic proportion.

He said they?ve confined those whom they suspect of having measles in separate cells to keep them away from healthy inmates...

Measles outbreak declared in Cebu prison

A measles outbreak was declared in a detention facility in Cebu after dozens of inmates tested positive for the contagious infection.

Acting Jail Warden Romeo Manansala of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) said records showed 51 inmates have been infected as of last Wednesday (June 25).

Manansala said the first suspected cases of measles were identified on June 9.

The number increased to more than 20 on June 16...

ZAMBOANGA CITY - Health agencies in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) and in Zamboanga Peninsula are on alert following a measles outbreak in Maguindanao and Sulu.

The Department of Health (DOH) in ARMM said the high number of confirmed cases in the different areas in ARMM prompted local government units to declare the outbreak.

Dr. Jojo Sinolinding said they continue to expect reports from different provinces regarding the current number of confirmed cases of measles to guide their next step.

Maguindanao has the highest reported number of measles cases at 364, 8 of whom have died. Marawi has 86 cases and 2 deaths, while Sulu has 90 cases and 5 dead...

DOH assures spread of measles 'not alarming'

DENGUE is not the only disease that?s been threatening lives in Northern Mindanao, yet another infection also caused by a virus has been spreading in the region.

The Regional Epidemiology, Surveillance and Disaster Response Unit (Resdru) of the Department of Health in the region (DOH-10) reported a total of 1,520 cases of suspected measles as of July 25, 2014.

Epidemic threshold

This is 2,880 percent higher compared to the same period last year, which reported only 51 cases.

The 1,520 incidents of suspected measles emerged from the different sentinel hospitals region-wide from January 1 to July 25 this year. Sentinel hospitals which also include health centers and clinics watch over cases on measles.

The latest surveillance report from the DOH-10 obtained by this paper showed that suspected measles has already reached the epidemic threshold...

Measles (?tigdas?) has killed at least 44 people, mostly children, in Central Luzon and Central Mindanao regions in the first six months of the year, reports from the Department of Health (DOH) showed.

In Central Luzon, 35 people died from measles as the number of suspected cases in the region rose sharply to 5,445 in the first six months of the year.

The January-June cases were 3,681.2 percent higher than the 143 cases for the same period last year, the DOH said. In 2013, most of the Central Luzon victims were children ages 5 and below, many of them unvaccinated.

In Central Mindanao, nine patients died from the disease in the same period, said Dr. Teogenes Baluma, the DOH regional director.

The good news, according to a report by the regional epidemiologist, Dr. Alah Baby Vingno, was that out of the 1,575 suspected cases monitored in the provinces of Sarangani, South Cotabato, North Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat and the cities of General Santos, Koronadal, Tacurong and Kidapawan, only 73 were confirmed cases...

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/12 August) ? Health authorities in Region 12 have recorded nine deaths in parts of the region due to complications caused by suspected measles infection during the first six months of the year.

Dr. Alah Baby Vingno, Department of Health (DOH) Region 12?s chief epidemiologist, said Tuesday the nine fatalities were among the 1,575 measles cases that were recorded by local health offices in the region from January to June.

The region only had a total of 148 suspected measles cases in the entire 2013 and with no death case or fatality during the period.

A report released by DOH-12?s Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit showed that Sultan Kudadat province reported the first fatality during the first quarter of the year...
