MANILA – The number of measles cases in the Philippines for January have increased by 638 percent compared to the same period in 2022, according to latest data from the Department of Health.

For the first month of 2023, the country logged a total of 59 cases of the highly contagious illness compared to 8 cases last year.

Zamboanga logged the highest number of cases in the country at 13, while Ilocos Region and Central Luzon both recorded 8 and CALABARZON with 7 cases.

However, it is important to note that mobility restrictions between January 2023 and January 2022 are very different--restrictions were tightened in 2022 due to the surge of the COVID-19 Omicron variant. Hence, the chances of measles infection was less likely.

Comparing to pre-pandemic January 2020, which logged almost 922 cases for the first month alone, figures this year remain significantly lower...

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines has recorded a 541-percent increase in measles and rubella cases from Jan. 1 to Feb. 25 this year compared to the same period last year.

Based on the latest surveillance report by the Department of Health (DOH) epidemiology bureau, 141 cases of measles and rubella have been reported since the start of the year. Of this number, 133 were measles cases, while eight were rubella.

Most of the cases were from the Zamboanga Peninsula (26), Metro Manila (25), and Calabarzon (20) regions. Only the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao had no reported case

Over 300 measles cases recorded in 3 months

THREE months into 2023, the number of measles cases in the country has surged to over 300, and is more than 300 percent higher than the previous year.

Based on the latest Disease Surveillance Report of the Department of Health (DOH), there are already 308 measles cases nationwide during the period of January 1 to April 1.

This is 328 percent higher compared to the 72 cases reported during the same period last year.

Having the highest number of cases reported are Zamboanga Peninsula (55), Central Visayas (38) and Central Luzon (33).

Seeing the biggest jump in cases are Zamboanga Peninsula (2,650 percent, 2 to 55), Caraga (2,400 percent, 1 to 25), and Central Visayas (1,800 percent, 2 to 38).

No deaths due to measles have been reported so far...

Measles cases up by over 300%

MEASLES cases in the Philippines continue to climb and is now over 300 percent higher compared to last year, according to the Department of Health (DOH).

Based on the latest DOH Disease Surveillance Report, 623 measles cases were recorded across the country from January 1 to May 20, which is 339 percent higher than the 142 measles cases recorded during the same period last year.

Zamboanga Peninsula has the highest number of measles cases with 90, followed by Central Visayas with 81, Central Luzon with 62, and National Capital Region with 61.

Having the highest year-to-year increase, on the other hand, are Soccsksargen (1,567%; 3 to 50), Eastern Visayas (1,300%; 4 to 56), Caraga (1,167%; 3 to 38), and Central Luzon (1,140%; 5 to 62).

Two deaths due to measles have already been reported this year for a case fatality rate of 0.32 percent. ...

MANILA, Philippines — Measles cases in the country have increased by 299 percent from January to October this year, according to the Department of Health (DOH).

Latest data released by the DOH’s Disease Surveillance Report showed there were 1,829 cases of measles recorded from Jan. 1 to Oct. 14 or higher by almost 300 percent during the same period last year with 458.

Among regions, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) logged the highest number of cases with 601.

It was followed by Central Luzon with 260 and Central Visayas with 126.

The BARMM also recorded the highest increase in the cases compared to 2022 with 4,523 percent or from 13 to 601.

It was followed by the Cordilleras with 1,800 percent or from one to 19 cases, and Soccsksargen (South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Sanos) with 800 percent or from 10 to 89.

Six fatalities from measles were recorded this year including two each in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) and BARMM, and one each in Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) and Davao region.​..

The country has logged 2,594 measles and rubella cases for the first 11 months of this year.

In a message to reporters, the Department of Health (DOH) said data from January 1 to November 25 translates to a 335-percent increase, or from 596 cases in the same period last year.

“Cases are currently showing a steady uptrend, with cases in the recent three to four weeks (October 29 to November 11) at six percent higher. Additionally, a total of 442 cases were reported in the recent four weeks,” the DOH said.

At the regional level, Ilocos Region, Calabarzon, and Zamboanga Peninsula showed continuous increase in the recent six-week period (October 15 to November 25), while the National Capital Region, Central Luzon, Bicol Region, Davao Region, Socsksargen, and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao showed case increases in the recent three to four weeks, reporting two to 253 new cases in the recent four weeks.​..
